Title: Modern Firearm Blacktail GMU 621, 624, 627
Post by: Phipps14 on June 18, 2021, 06:38:22 PM
Any advice on how to hunt these GMU for modern firearm, I see a lot of trucks off the side of 104 in the Coyle unit during the season. I believe its POPE land, but am unsure if I can park off the highway and walk in or if there were any specific areas to head in.

Rayonier land now, so need to pay to play. But if you have a permit yes you can park off 104 and walk in.

On X still says pope. Have they changed there signs at the gates yet to Rainier? I know they were talking about buying that land up.

I was hunting Sandy Shore Lake and parked off 104 a few years back, walking back to my truck and WSP was about to write me a ticket, said ya can't park off the highway. Didn't argue or ask why.

I was off the pavement and in the grass too. I have seen vehicles parked off the highway during hunting season though and never a piece of paper stuck under a wiper blade. Unless they write a ticket and mail it.  :dunno:

Go to Rayoniers website for a current ownership and fee map..most everything that was Pope.

State will get ya for parking on any hwy within right of way (I think 104 is like 40-50' from center line as they left space to 4 lane that road )..unless it's at an established access road/ gate etc...

According to wdfw Rayonier is going to implement the pay to play by Sept for Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson...etc..

DNR and USFS land is available to hunt on if you don't want to pay to hunt on private land.

There are some great spots to hunt on that Rayonier land but honestly they really screwed up on the way they designed those permits. I won't be wasting my money on one, if they rethink the layout and the lands included I might consider it in the future. For every P&Y or B&C buck on those permit lands there are 2 more within those GMU's on public access* lands.

 :yeah:
Best blacktail I’ve shot was on state land in 624
And I have hunted over there for 40 years on pope and dnr
I’ll take a 2 pt any time I see one when I used to hunt it

The crooked main beam on that toad is freaking awesome. Something about the peninsula bucks and the weird genetics that get tossed out just make me love it more.

They should have made all the original Pope lands in Kitsap and Jefferson county one permit, drive in access, camping allowed, and 5 cord of wood for $350. I would have bought it for the firewood alone and to able to hunt my antlerless tag with my kids from the truck. Including certain lands in the General Hunting permit, some for free, and very selected few for permit exclusive only was a bad idea. If they left any lands open to free access it should be the Mt. Jupiter trailhead lands. They are going to take a PR hit by locking people out of that area for non-hunting recreation access by limiting permits and charging for access. They really pooped the bed IMO.

So in 627 would state lands even be worth someone to even blink an eye at with all the hiking and such with the trails through all the state forests? Curious if anyone even sees any deer there. I used to see deer on pope lands there but have not spent any time on state.

Yup.

Here's a buck we had on the cam behind my parent's house. The next one is my 2017 Kitsap archery buck.

I have a buddy that gets good pictures of deer on a cam that on state land. Also lots of pictures of bears chewing on it  :bash:
As far as hikers go, they tend to not like it when the rut starts and its 38 degrees with sideways freezing rain and you're out there wondering why you ever took up hunting. Those are the days when the trails are quiet and the deer are out. Lots of good bucks taken off state land when the weather is like that.

Came back for Christmas break last year and missed right through a bucks antlers due to a bad yardage on my first day out. Spent the next week and a half freezing from lunch till dark hoping to find another. This game sucks some times but its all part of the fun!

Nice
Biggest blacktail I ever laid eyes on crossed Seabeck highway on my way out for late buck
He was a giant
I jumped out on him and he stood 50 yards away looking at me behind an old farm gate
Houses around
So looked at him and said holy chit

627 has some big bucks hidden around. Like said above a lot are on private land but there is some nice ones on small tracks of public land that people dont go to. This is from a couple years ago but it is 2 of 9 different bucks on my dads property. There is state land not far behind his property on this side of the road and there is a small 40 acre piece of DNR that borders the piece he has on the other side of the road.

The Rayonier break down/ layout of pay to play properties and the amount per block makes no sense.

Should of went gmu and called it good....and when you charge the amount that an out of state tag costs...well no thanks...I got the free use pass and may pick up the 160 pass...but the 300 plus area's aren't worth it.
