Title: BEST JEEP TIRE!!! lets hear it.
Post by: carpsniperg2 on June 28, 2021, 09:03:45 PM
To all you jeep guys what are you running? Looking for off road but also a smoother black top ride. GO!

Dick cepek extreme country and toyo open country are on my radar. Feedback welcome!

Like Cooper STT Pro and B.F Goodrich T/A KO2

The Goodrich if you are looking for "smoother" pavement ride.  After a year the Coopers are starting to make more noise on the pavement.

BFG KO2s for me. I've had an AWD jeep for 15ish years. The KO2s have handled the AWD tire wear better than other brands I've tried. Also great on and off road performance. I don't put the dedicated studded snow tires on unless the roads have ice.

Stay away from Toyo. They seem to wear faster and are very stiff making for a rough ride.

I just put BFG KO mud terrains on, much better ride. For mud tires they are pretty quiet on pavement.

Bfg km3 is a great tire, little more aggressive than the ko2ís but still a smooth ride on the pavement.

Cooper ST Maxx, best all around tire hands down. Off-road performance like a mud terrain, great in snow, not very loud on the highway, and on a full size F150 I've had two sets of them last over 60k miles with a ton of highway driving.

BFG mud terrain KO2 255/80/17 has been my favorite tire and what I ran on my last jeep.  They're a fairly tall narrow tire often referred to as "pizza cutters" but they work well and because they're relatively narrow they generally don't rub.  I had them on my last Rubicon even before I put a 2.5 lift on it and they didn't rub.  I still have a new set mounted on AEV Pintlers sitting in my shop and no Jeep.

Cooper ST Max or Goodyear Duratrac. My last three sets of tires of been Duratracs and they've outperformed the BFG's and Toyo's by a longshot.

In another tire thread someone mentioned that they liked the Falken Wildpeak A/T 3W.

So I bought some for my pickup a few weeks ago. Very quiet, rides nice.

:yeah:
Not to hijack this, as mine are on an '04 Tundra and not a Jeep. I'm 10,000 miles into mine and love them. Quiet, smooth ride. Great traction in all conditions and even clean the mud out pretty well for an AT.

Depends on use.  Need more info?   Dry or wet side?  Size of tire?  Hiway mostly or off road or extreme use?  Im not BF fan anymore.  Duratrac is very good tire for snow, wet, light mud and road.   Cooper is tough and good overall.  I have had good luck with Toyo AT series on diesel trucks.  Falken??  Not had em.  If you arent a heavy mud use guy I would stay with AT style.  If mud then Cooper or less mudd duratrac.  If roads, wet, snow ice, toughness, general rough rock/dirt then Duratrac or AT.  Cepek?  Nope.  Jeeps are lighter so options available so I think its about intended use you want...  You dont need a *censored* tire on jeeps unless your "wheeling".

Definitely a few stand out by what Iím seeing. I donít mind about hearing about tires on other rigs we have lots of different rigs with different brands. So brand is not to important just life span and the Ability to hold up well off road ďnot extremeĒ and ride decent on the highway.

Tire size will either be a 31x10.5r15 or 33x10.5r15 or 16. I am considering a 2/3Ē lift.
Rig is a factory jeep 98 tj a cherry I pulled out of a garage. I have read that the 31 should be good and not rub on the factory clearance. It has 30x9.5 right now. With the 2/3 lift 33 should be no problem.

Falken, Duratrac, Toyo AT3, BF AT.  Toyo likley last longest follow by Falkens.  Duratrac best for snow and toughness.  Falken best all round?  IMOP from my research.  I am leaning towards Toyo for diesel.

cooper st maxx....im on my second truck with them.  pretty good for on road noise and fantastic offroad/snow/mud while still behaving on wet pavement.
SUPER strong sidewalls, they are a bit heavier, but its a price you pay for durability.
duratracs have notoriously weak sidewalls, as do falkens wild peaks.
wild peaks will be the tamest on road with regards to noise but the worst offroad of those 3.

Run the falken wildpeak at3 on my '16 Colorado, lots of life span, think im 50k and lots to go

New - they was great in untracked snow, still aren't terrible with dulled tread corners. Got me in scary far in deeper snow up to 18 inches (fluffy)

Well used - they not so good on tracked snow/ice, they're getting kinda scary in icy backwoods roads that was np when new.

Rocks they're tough

Mud seem fine, I never do deep churning mud but they do fine on normal mud stuff

Highway no issues, rides nice, and not loud.

They beat the heck out of the goodyear wrangler  kevlar the truck came with

Ya, they came stock on my truck.

Had a flat within 500 miles due to rock puncture on gravel road, which ruined the tire,  and wore out by 30k

I said adventure up above, that was wrong, they were the goodyear wrangler durotrac with kevlar came stock on the trail boss, they looked good, had sidewall protection / grippers but ya, rocks went through them and had flats less than 500 miles in and worn out too quickly imo

Still better than most stock tires, but I wouldn't use them again.

Good years are JUNK! I have had them on rigs when I purchased them. They have left me stranded more than once. Iíd stay away from them. I run the maxxis bighorns on my Jeep and also ran them on all my Tacomaís. Good all around tire.

I'm running Super Swamper Trxus MTs on my 98 . Love them in snow , mud , and the street
I  had a set of BFG KM2s on it before that  I bought new after finishing the build . Took them off and sold them in a week , I hated them .

With a 3" lift you will be fine going to a 33" tire ( although you will want to regear to get some power back ) And if your going to get serious with the throttle the rear Dana 35 wont last long .
Research what ever kit Manufacturer your thinking about . ALOT of Kits out there . Alot that dont work or are a compromise . I've built 9 TJs so if you have questions I can help .

Thanks that's great to know.
I ordered a 2" suspension today. Just the simple lift with pucks and quality shocks.
I might end up with 31/32" is what I am thinking. "dont think the 31/32 will look to funny under the 2" lift" Wont lag down as much going that route over the 33" tires I'm thinking.

I'm not going to nuts with the project. Front bumper as I am going to be pulling it with my rv to hunt locations. I will be using the d ring shackles on the bumper as connection points to tow. Light to mid off road hunting. Mostly gravel and the normal mountain roads. No rock crawling or anything like that.
So 2" lift is all I need and probably 31/32" tires. I have a set of 16" wheels ordered just waiting on tires when I have some more $ and after I settle on a size and brand.

Replaced Duratracs with Patagonias just for stronger sidewall.   Lil stiffer but not much ride difference.   Duratracs were good - but 2 not 3 ply sidewall.  Donít think you can beat duratracs on ice packed snow

Although not on a jeep.  I also run the Cooper ST-max tires on my dodge ram 3500 and they have been great.  My son however has on his Toyota Tacoma and his Toyota sr5 the new Yokahoma GEOLANDAR M/Tģ G003 .   They have been excellent tires.  I was going to buy them but there just a tad too agressive for my Ram.  They would be great jeep tire.

Another on Falken Wildpeak AT3's here, I have them on my  06 Nissan XTerra and they have a little over 50k on them and still good, wear has been better than what they advertised.  couple years ago had someone blast through a stop sign because of ice and had to put my truck in a ditch to avoid them, thought I might have an issue getting out because a few feet of snow in an empty irrigation ditch, pulled right out no issue.  ive been lucky enough to be the guy friends and family call when they get stuck and I attribute a lot of it to the tires being nice and sticky why things get slick.

I have been a big fan of the Firestone Transforce AT, and still am. Needed to replace my set on my pickup this spring. So I got a quote from the local Firestone dealer, go in to buy them and the manager lady wouldn't honor the quote, so I gladly, and quietly left. I spoke to Jeff at Tires West in Warden, he recommended the Falken Wildpeak AT3. I bought a set of Wildpeaks from Tires West for a good price, had great service, and now have some smooth riding, excellent tires. I too recommend the Wildpeaks, and you cant beat small town service of Tires West.

A Jeep vs a Diesel truck.  Tires arent the same due to weight and load.ply rating.  Something to keep in mind.  I struggle to find good HD tire that lasts like Dads Toyota's tires do!   :chuckle:  Geolanders were great for him years ago and lasted for ever it seems.  Toyo AT2 were a good tire for me years back.  Duratracs were great on Ol F350 but they do wear sorta quick. Good luck.  All I can say is it sounds like ya want AT and not MT.  I agree, MT are over rated and $$.

I ran Nitto trail grapplers on my Diesel, liked them, but they're shot now.

Got around really good with them, didn't last huge long time though.

32.5 tall 12 wide (ish) I don't know exact size off top of my head.

Pretty sure the patagonias is what's on my truck now.
Seem alright so far.
If I remember right right bought online at Amazon or walmart. For a pretty reasonable price.
I do remember les swabs was gonna charge me 300 a tire for there brand.Got the Patagonia for like 150 a tire ,that's half the price.

something to keep in mind with local tire shops though are the replacement warranty you can get.
back on the road in 2 hours rather than a week.
most tire shops will match online prices for same tires obviously.  i usually watch for sales, or go through discount tire direct, which is discount tires online store

Cooper ST Max or Goodyear Duratrac. My last three sets of tires of been Duratracs and they've outperformed the BFG's and Toyo's by a longshot.

That Duratrac came on our new GMC AT 4. Worst tire I have ever had on a pick up. 20K miles they start getting loud and bad on wet pavement. No noticeable wear. 30K miles they howl and have a nice howl vibration. Currently, at 42K miles they get terrible traction on wet pavement, make the inside of a new truck sound like a Willies Jeep with 1940 military surplus tires. All my rigs have BFGs. Waiting for winter to ditch the misery of the Duratrac hell.

My wife has a Wrangler with a leveling kit on it which is approx a 2" lift and she has had 33x12.5x18 Toyo Open Country M/T on it for a couple years now and they have been good so far. Not to bad for road noise and the wear has been good.

Patagonia on the Jeep and Cooper on the truck. Patagonia's dont have a heavy enough sidewall for heavy duty trucks. Toyo's are great for the first 20k then they get too stiff and are crap in the rain. On the truck I run the Toyo's out in the summer and coopers for hunting season. Have been happy with Patagonia's on the jeep and will prob buy another set.

   Duratracs better on ice and packed snow.  Also grip well on rocks but sidewall is 2 ply.

Duratracs come in different ply ratings.  If you put a d rated on a 3/4 ton you wont be happy.

But if you matchbthe tire to your vehicle they are tough to beat except for sidewall strength.

LOLOL.....at 20K, 2 sets of BFG's I had in a row would not pass the penny test (2nd set was warranty to cover the poor performance of the 1st set).....@ 30K I would have been running on my rims. To each their own.  Also, if you are using these typr tires to "drive up and down the west coast"   you may want to look at different tires for highway driving. JS  ;)

They came on the 1500 AT 4. I've had 3 sets of BFGs on my  2500, 3 sets on my F 350. All got 50k wore nice and great traction till they're down to nothing.

The Duratracs on our 2020 at 4 with 40k look great. They just sound like a B 17 bomber going down the road. That sucks ass in a new truck. And they don't get good traction

I spend 6 months a year in the desert and get off road a lot. Also drive over mountain passes between there, wa and montana. I simply don't agree. My one year old A/T 4 1500 has 42K miles doing all of the above. Cannot wait to get these horrible miserable tires off my new beautiful now well used truck.

You're correct, they are noisier and outperformed by the BFG's on wet pavement, for sure :) But they'll kick your BFG's ass in the snow and mud, or any other off-road condition.   :chuckle:

Duratracs on jeep and chevy 3/4 crew long box. performing wayyyyy better than BFG's for me.

Smoking crack. Duratraks are junk compared to BFGs from day one. I drive up and down the west cost summer and winter. The Duratraks are probably the worst tire I've ever had on a vehicle

JS  ;)

I drive up and down the coast. My F 350 is my desert chase truck with KM3's and hauls my tractor down to my property. The Chevy 2500 had the dog box on it with KMO's. 3rd set now. The new 1500 A/T 4 has duratracs. They are barely worn at all. The lack of wear is impressive along with the horrible howling noise which is now louder than worn out KM3's on a 2002 F 350. If you only got 20K miles I think you probably have some serious suspension alignment issues?

Nope, that would cause some serious uneven wear.
FYI, 90% of my miles are driven on mountain roads, and rough ones. Like I stated, to each their own.

You put 20K on a set and already on another set? Thats a ton of off road. Im just hauling a 300 gallon spray tank off road 90% of the time the last 2 weeks spraying my farm and a friends land.

Will have to look at the hour meter on the new truck. Its pretty high and most is highway driving. Can't imagine how many hours it takes doing 20-30mph or less. I remember wearing out my old Schwab'y RTV's mud terrains on my 85 toyota going from Wenatchee to EBurg and back to Natches all the time. Was running Coopers when I was running around Wenatchee. Those old SST's were great too.

Im currently on a set of the Duratracs that came on a new chevy trailboss.  I do like them and figure they will be great until the mountain roads are impassable.  Then, for plowed snow covered roads, I still think a quality set of winter tires with studs is the best and thats what Ive done with past trucks.  However, the Duratrac is more aggressive than what I normally run and will probably replace them with an "AT" of the more aggressive variety, just not the bigger lugged open tread type of the more mud terrain style.  Last set I bought was the Falken Wildpeak AT3 and they were very nice.  I didnt get to run them long as I sold that truck but I think thats what Ill put on the new truck once I run out the Duratracs.

Mudders look cool and fling mud for sure, but they have never worn worth a pinch of that Ive seen in my 60+ years.  No longer like ruff ride accompanied with noise.  Only real negative I will add is Ive known plenty of BFG fans and Ive never been impressed with mileage they get out of a tire.  Ive always been quick to get new skin on the wheels and would never run tires down as far as I commonly see others runnem until theyre obviously shot.   :twocents:

Trail Boss Chebby

Wore out the duratracs pretty quick, had flat tires within 500 miles, think my 1st was around 120 miles

Replaced with at3, no flats and wearing much better

At3 (with wear) suck in wet packed snow and ice

Going to true winter tires this fall.

New at3 was pretty good in winter though, so I'd wait till you have wear or extra $ then get real winters

Wanted to give y;all a update. I Forgot I had a set of 31" wranglers that are like brand new stored. I bought some new 16" black wheels and got them all mounted up. Now just got to get the life kit in and then I will get them mounted up.

Thank you all for your feedback. I always like to hear others thoughts and experiences. The good and the bad.

Curious, how old are the Wranglers?
I had a couple of sets in the mid-nineties that were excellent tires however tires age and get dry and brittle.
Just an FYI....
