Leaving the house right now......
To the big disappointment of other hunter and no deer ,
Here I go..............
Gotta poop
Gotta check hunting hours
Gotta start truck
Then I'm going.........
Ok looks like 6:45 for the first deer down......
So I'll leave now ,about an hour to drive, get to gate, wait till about 6:30,start walking,be at least to the first little drainage by 6:45 .
And who know how much BS in between all that .
Goodluck you all.

Where just gonna hike around on higher ground is the plan now. We backed off, turned around ,trying to access from a different location. But same area.

Always hated that feeling....my hope in those situations was maybe it would get the deer moving :dunno:

We have seen two muley Doe,cow moose from about a mile away. The hunters at the gate walked the lower rd below us.
Those deer where already on the move when we seen them.
There is another hunter above us ,maybe 5-600 yards.
Watching us eat breakfast and soak in the mourning sun.
Will make an attempt to move in a bit to a better spot.
The hills have eyes up here.
Heard two shots ,not to far, pretty close to us.
Trail cam is gonna have to wait, cause we got pushed in the opposite direction.

Sitting in my morning stand since 0655. The wind started to pick up about an hour ago but hasn't really been enough to move anything. Hoping for a bit of rain. Only birds so far.

Update....
We came back down road . Dropped over another ridge.
Ate lunch, spotted another hunter about 350 yards above us.
Haven't seen anything move since this mourning.
Where headed back to truck.
Head home......
Maybe come up with WT plan for the evening.
Way too many hunters up here ,and not enough mule deer moving.
Real nice sunny day to be out,but not good to keep the deer moving.

No action this morning for me in the blacktail woods.

It was quiet out here. Maybe 5-6 shots. More than last year but less than other years. It was warm this morning though. I took off a layer or 2 before leaving the house after I went outside.

388 checking in. Very few shots Iíve heard all day. Spoke to a rancher last night on a final spot check. Said he hasnít seen many deer all year, but has seen quite a few elk. Go figure.

Still keeping it "general" myself.
Actually have not even purchased a tag.
.
Archery season I could shoot a doe in my backyard, but around Halloween the bucks show up.
.
I really like seeing them in my yard, so I'll drive off to the woods to explore...
.
They stand in my driveway while I pack.
They watch me leave....
.
I hunt somewhere else, and end up with a bag of chanterelles.
.
I see a few does...
.
But the adventure of the next discovery is more important than just filling a tag.
.
I envy you guys that are out there, but just cannot get used to the number of hunters during modern rifle
.
I am thinking about getting a modern tag because I get a chance to go explore a new area...
(And Halloween...)
Last week of October, and late buck 3rd week of November) has always been, and will continue to be the "magic" time for me to see bucks.
.
But I like eating deer, and am used to bowhunting.
.
I eat does, and any other LEGAL deer.
.
..
But trying to decide, should I buy a modern tag and look for a buck?
.
Buy a muzzleloader tag so I can shoot a buck, if I see one during late elk season?
.
Or an archery tag, so I can smack a doe, and have meat?
.,..

Probably as crazy as it is here in Winthrop, seems like an endless string of vehicles all watching the 4 bucks and 3 does in the yard. The ones this morning even got to watch the 2 point and fork horn spare between the house and the road, less than 30 feet between the 2

I had a guy today drive past at least 10 no Tresspassing and Private Property signs to start glassing my property from my driveway. I asked him what he was looking at and he would not respond to me, just stood there glassing like I wasn't really there. My 2 shorthairs were running around and I said "your not going to shoot my dogs are you"? Kind of jokingly and kind of not. He then went around to the other side of his SUV and started glassing my neighbors property. I guess he decided to leave when I started to get to close. Then later in the day he and another rig stopped at my place in the middle of the road and stared at me for about 2 minutes, I guess because I was rude to him I deserved a stare down.

That's funny.....
Cause the hunter I had above me kept starring at me and my son while snack time breakfast.
I looked through the bino ,told the kid damm he is fater than me. Then I said ,no way in h@$!! He walked up there.
He has to have an ATV up there.
I never did find out how he got up there. :chuckle:

Photos not so great but this is the biggest buck I ever killed 3x4 with eye guards, 18 1'2" wide.

The rain was turning to mist this morning about 8:00 when I rounded the corner of a game exclosure fence Green Diamond put up on the Wynoochee. Pretty flat but there was a rise that broke over about a 100 yards in front of me. I couldn't see beyond. I set my shooting sticks up, rested my gun on them an almost immediately saw a deer which I thought a doe to my left. looked at her with the scope and yes it was a doe but she kept looking off to her left. Scope had a lot of water on it so I dragged out some tissue and swiped it. looked at her again and she kept looking to her left but I saw nothing there. She moved on and I scanned farther in the direction she had been looking and there was a deer. I instantly new it to be a buck. All I could see was his head and neck. He was looking right at me. I put the cross hairs under his chin and pulled the trigger and he was gone.
I felt confident in my shot. I was going to pick up my empty and I thought the heck with that, worry about the deer first. I walked towards where he was and when I got to where I thought he had been, nothing. It was very open so I started getting worried. I kept walking and every step I was more apprehensive. About a 100 feet past where i thought he should be I cleared the top of the rise and there he was upright in a depression. His legs had collapsed but he was upright with his nose in the dirt. Never even moved enough to flop over on his side.
This is the second buck I have killed walking the perimeter of that fence. I'll be sad to see it get too growed up. Probably two more years hunting there at most.
Two miles out to the gate for my cart and the round trip with the deer put me out by noon. I have a feeling I burned up a lot of luck getting this deer.

If you think that happened, I think you need to read again.
Looking at a previously spotted deer through your scope is far different from "glassing with your rifle scope". By that logic hunters would never actually put their scope on a deer.

Congrats on a great buck, Humptulips.

I'll just take the blame for some poor writing. I can see how you might think I was glassing with my scope when I said "I scanned in the direction she had been looking". To be clear I looked at the doe twice through my scope. The first time it was hard to see because of the water on the lens. I wiped it off and gave her a second look. I then scanned in the direction she had been looking with my naked eyes. Once I saw the deer which I was sure was a buck I brought the gun to bear on it looking through the scope for the third time.
Sorry if my writing was confusing.

Great Blacktail Iíd be happy with a mulie that was that big!
I hunted the opener in a low deer low hunter area. Hiked into some 6000í open meadow country but didnít glass up any deer. Had a great hike, went further than I wanted too, resting today gonna hunt evenings this week after work. Moon might have them feeding at evenings and at night. Good luck out there. Saw a lot of road hunters.

Hunted the Coweeman yesterday and passed up a spike about 15 minutes after daylight, didn't see another deer until 15 minutes before dark and couldn't pass this 1 up. First opening day deer I've ever shot, don't know if I was emotionally prepared to be done so soon. I guess its grouse season now :chuckle:

Hunted the Coweeman yesterday and passed up a spike about 15 minutes after daylight, didn't see another deer until 15 minutes before dark and couldn't pass this 1 up. First opening day deer I've ever shot, don't know if I was emotionally prepared to be done so soon. I guess its grouse season now :chuckle:

Way to get it done and move on.

Super nice buck Humptulips!  Congratulations.

Had to bring it all together for a bt like that ol stud.  Skill, patience, knowledge, and a bit of luck.  Great buck, way to go !

My son and I have been out since the 13th since he had a youth antlerless draw that started the 8th. Saw 7 Elk but no blacktail. not even a Doe. Saw plenty of fresh sign/scat. It is Only our second year hunting and I have no idea what we're doing wrong. Maybe we're just too loud moving around...Seems like we should have seen at least a Doe since we had the woods to ourselves. I'm almost obsessed with checking the wind, making sure we don't have it to our backs. Spent time out of the truck hiking in behind gates and glassing, still hunting the thick stuff... Don't have the opportunity to go back out until next sunday-wed, so hopefully We'll miss the weekend crowd, but we'll keep at it.

Shot this guy in a draw at 7AM Sunday.  He was working down into some timber and I rushed a 170 yd shot off of a quick backpack rest.  I was 90% confident I had missed him or that it was a poor shot placement (low), so I gave it an hour or so before I went and looked for blood.  And blood there was, lots of it.  Turned out the shot was low, but broke his leg and hit his heart...he only made it about 30 yards.  It was only about a 3 mile pack out but 1500 feet of elevation (mostly down thankfully) and I was camped back there so 2 trips and it was late before I got home.  Psyched with how it turned out and to have some meat in the freezer though - I was down to my last package!

PathfinderJR is graduating from college next month and just enlisted in the Army.  Might be his last hunting season with me for a few years (depending on when he can get leave).

Gotter done yesterday morning right after first light.  Spotted this guy sneaking into a draw from about 3/4 of a mile.  Didn't come out for 30 minutes, so we figured he was bedded.  Stalked into the draw and found him bedded in a "buck hole".  The bed was so deep that all we could see was his head and neck.  JR set up at 160 yards and was about to shoot him in the throat when he got nervous and decided to stand.  Perfect broadside lung shot, went less than 20 yards.

Going to be too late for the general guys, but could be interesting for the late hunts.

Back from the Methow!  Lots of bucks seen but no three pointers to shoot at!  Got up into some snow, zero tracks!  Saturday ran across to many fat tire bikers and stick pole walkers so I left one area!  Heard a few were taken up high, but the higher we went, the less sign  :dunno:   But at least I was out hunting!!

It will be interesting to see the season's final number outa the valley!!

Another General season is nearly in the books, this may be offensive to some and if it is tuff Chit if the shoe fits wear it.

To the "Hunters" that got out and hunted and got a deer Congratulations on a successful season. If you didn't get a deer you know you at least gave it your all and tried.

To the "Road Hunters"that got a deer congratulations of getting your Participation Trophy" for being on the field

To the "Hunter?" that did neither but did manage to shoot a deer in the vicinity of the cemetery IN TOWN. How does it feel to shoot a deer that would eat out of you hand? Yes you got your Participation Trophy for being in uniform, but let ME hope that the meat from that deer rots in the stomachs of all that consume it especially the shooter.
