Title: I'm a moron, anyone know about AZ 6B Muleys?
Post by: luvmystang67 on July 06, 2022, 09:35:28 AM
So... I came back from a vacation, realized I had like 2 hours to put in for AZ Sheep and Deer, threw together an application from a 2019 version of an application, and I'm a moron and didn't really spend much time checking the hunts I was putting in for (no time).

I drew a less-than-desirable mule deer hunt Nov 4-10 in unit 6B, rifle.  This unit is essentially a block of land to the west of Sedona.  Anyone with any local knowledge, or nice local friends, I would really love to hear your input.  I've gone back and forth and considered not even going, all the way to dragging my wife with me and letting her enjoy Sedona while I go wander aimlessly around the canyons.

It looks like most people prefer the hunt area for elk and coues deer, not mule deer.

Yes, I'm an idiot and I feel like it.  I guess the one thing I have going for me is its close to a nice tourist area so I might be able to convince the family its a good spot to go together in Nov.

No, I didn't buy the point guard thing...

not sure if you have GoHunt but this is what it says

Rifle
Nov 4 - Nov 10, 2022

"The state considers this season an opportunity hunt, meaning the state issues many tags, giving many hunters a chance to hunt deer, but hunter success is low and hunting pressure high. Occasionally a hunter kills a big buck. Try the pinyon/juniper habitat in the Dry Creek and Spring Creek basins of the Verde Valley. The season is too early for rut activity. Deer move little."

Looks like success has been about 20% the last couple years - so there's def a chance. good luck!

Thanks, that also mimics a lot of the information that the state provides.  Maybe it'll be a good elk/coues scouting hunt for a future draw!  Those success rates are pretty abysmal, hopefully I can outhike or outspot that average.  Although its always really hard to spot deer in an environment you're not familiar with.  Appreciate the notes.

Well, aside from feeling like an idiot for getting drawn in a pretty unexceptional unit, the area down there is beautiful and I think could be a fun hunt.

I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to do to get the meat home if I am indeed successful.

"Looking for an AirBnB with a chest freezer" doesn't seem to be an option for most rentals...

Dry ice. It will freeze the meat.

I wouldn’t feel to bad you get to hunt Az. Sounds like a fun hunt. I would take the wife let her enjoy Sedona. 20 percent is not terrible it’s as good or better than some of Idaho elk unit success rates. Other than that I have nothing I haven’t ever hunted Arizona
