Title: Outboard tiller handle issue?
Post by: Mfowl on August 04, 2022, 09:22:56 PM
I have an 05 merc 40hp efi tiller on my 16' boat. Recently on the water I began accelerating and soon after my rpm's dropped to idle and I lost all response in the tiller handle. The motor stayed in gear and will shift F N R but only in idle speed. I have no throttle response from the tiller handle and it is stiff/reluctant to move. Has anyone experienced anything like this. I am having trouble digging up any tiller specific info other than parts. I suspect a cable/wire is disconnected/broken? Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

I had a similar issue happen on an early 70s Johnson 6 HP.
The shaft going to the tiller handle broke at the connecting link where the tiller hinge is at. I had to use a pair of vise grips to work the throttle all the way back to the dock.

Probably not much help with a newer motor though.

Hmmm...thought I deleted this one? It was actually a linkage rod that became disconnected from the engine block. Was an easy fix but it happened again. So I may need to replace a part. But the motor does work! Thanks!
