Got into a lot of mackerel of of Westport this weekend. Kept a few for salmon and crab baits. Anybody eat them, and best way to cook? Plenty of ideas online, but hey, even moon snails have recipes.
-
I eat them at Sushi bars, unfortunately no idea what else to do with them. Shrimp seem willing to climb into pots after them.
-
Crab bait.
-
Yup, trade them all for crab.

Years ago me and a buddy were getting into them . Popular opinion was they are no good , but we are never ones to shy away from trying things .
Most times its a picky person that wont eat belly meat off of a Chinook and or care and preparation .
Anyway we took a couple and bled them really well and then into ice . Then did them "Mediterranean" style rubbed with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. Then a piss hot grill .
They weren't the BOMB but definately edible . Strong tuna taste . We didnt keep anymore as we had Chinook,Coho, ling, and rockfish piling up .
I dont fish salt much anymore but I would givem a go again if given the chance .

Gonna try em. Sure hit like a freight train. Coulda swore most were kings at first. About 4lbs average size
-
Yep we thought the same thing . A 4lber fights like a 10 lb chinook :chuckle:
-
Them are great Halibut bait. Shoulda froze a few dozen
-
I've so much bait piled up. They are a great salmon bait. Cut into small strips on hootchies and spinners. I ground one up for filling superbaits.

Don't know what type of mackerel are being caught here but a few years ago guiding in SE Ak I got into a bunch of Atka Mackerel and sent a couple down while halibut fishing, our herring and octopus got hit within a minute or 2 of hitting bottom, the mackerel didn't get touched, soaked them about 20 minutes then switched out to the good bait. :twocents:

They are great. Their meat is very similar to tuna. I have heard they are great smoked. The time I ate them I just pan fried them.
-
We breaded and deep fried chunks while fishing in Ilwaco a few weeks back... It was excellent!
-
Well, I found they are simple to clean and when grilled make excellent mak-melt sandwiches. They will be going into the cooler from here on out.
-
east coast i canned in tomato sauce, was excellent especially smaller tinker macks

I'd like to hear more about those excellent mak-melt sandwiches.

Grill just like you'd tuna. Cheese, lettuce, bacon and maters.
-
We got into a big ball of them a few years ago just west of neah bay and loaded up.
Tried them a bunch of different ways, but I think my favorite was smoked in a brine with dill and minimal sugar.
Fried, baked, sautéed, was all good.
If I run into them I will definitely try to plug the boat!

Kinda like tune there’s no limit of them right?

Unless it is rap. I can only handle about 2 minutes of that stuff.
