Title: Late season tactics???
Post by: Tbob on November 28, 2022, 12:20:30 PM
Okay y’all, I’m  headed out for a late season archery elk hunt out near the coast. I’ve got 3 days to get it done. So all you experienced elk hunters, where and how are you spending your time in the woods this time of year? Glassing clearcuts? Sitting trails in the timber? Walking gated roads all day hoping to cover ground, glass and go? Just trying to maximize my time to the best on this hunt and fill the freezer. I can shoot cows and 3pt or better bull in this unit. Supposed to be rainy and cold everyday. Thank so much!

Spend as much time out as possible. Be out before dark and don’t even think about leaving a spot untill shooting light has ended. It’s a tough hunt for sure.

I have a Toutle bull tag that opens tomorrow, a few weeks ago I was hoping for snow, now I'm hoping there isn't to much snow. where ever I end up, I plan on spending a lot of time glassing.
I planned on using late buck to scout for elk but got sick and spent the whole weekend in bed so I'm starting from scratch, most of the area I hunted in Sept is probably buried under 2-3 feet of snow.
Good luck.

Right on! Thanks for the heads up! Yeah I plan on being out from dark till dark fri/Sat/sun/mon. There’s 3 of us so we’re planning on splitting up (in the same general area though each day) and hope at least one of us can get lucky and catch one slippin!
   Good luck out there!

TBob, I think depending on how/where youre hunting could dictate how you hunt.  But if you can cover ground (even on foot behind gates), we usually do well moving and glassing.  Once animals are spotted we put a plan in place.

If you already know where animals are, then you can work the timber or general area that you know they will be moving.

I just saw this, and im late to the party.  I've had luck putting out bait stations with alfalfa. then setting up a tree stand or ground blind nearby. only takes a day or two for them to start hitting the bait.  it doesn't take long to throw out half a dozen stations.  Of course stay with in the law for quantity and distance between stations.
