Here it is for when they do start to drop.
Everything around me is still packing.
-
Saw a bull yesterday only packing a left side.

wow that seems early unless we are talking bull moose.
-
Very early for elk, likely never grew one, or broke off.

:yeah:

Seen one was well the week before Christmas. Figured he'd broke it off but it was right at his pedestal
-
I've never found a fresh elk shed before March but I've found fresh deer as early as December 15 and seen deer with both sides in the same area well into spring. I think with the right combination of stress and other factors antlers can shed any time after the rut
-
Sure looked shed to me :dunno:
-
Its an interesting topic I don't want to thread jack but I'm pretty sure stress nutrients and losing daylight are the 3 biggest factors. I'm sure genetics are in the mix too. I think once their done fighting over women they don't really need them until the next rut
-
Testosterone drop is what makes the antlers shed. The animal carries the testosterone levels from the rut until the spring with most species and then the levels drop causing the antler base to deteriorate. A sick or wounded animal would probably do that much sooner so Karl could have easily seen a bull with a shed antler. Keep an eye out for it!
-
It ain't fresh but I found it on the 1st! Does that count??
-
I’d say yes
-
And I'm on the board for 2023 I don't think its from this year though
-
Let’s get this started, couple New Years sheds from north Idaho. Most are still packing but I’m seeing quite a few bald heads too.
-
Dandy Teacherman
-
I’m envious teacherman. We still got 2’ of snow here
-

stick to mule deer, you don’t know elk..
:chuckle:
-
I’m envious teacherman. We still got 2’ of snow here
We have lost over 50% of our snow in the last week! Headed back out tomorrow after work for couple hrs.
-
On the board!
-
:P
-
It’s tough living in an area I can shed hunt after work 😂
-
-
Nice
-
Nice work
-
Fun day with the kids and Aussies.
-
Dang teach your killing it
-
Saw quite a few Muley bucks yesterday while bird hunting, all still full packing.
-
Awesome
-
Fun day with the kids and Aussies.
Are those two smaller ones a set? Looks like it to me. Great finds!

They are a set 🤙🏼
-
Took a friend out we found 3 more again today with our pups in couple hrs. All three were smaller 4 pts. One set one single.
-
Anyone ever found a spike shed? Deer or elk doesn't matter. I've never come across one
-
I've found several spike elk sheds, one spike blacktail shed, and a spike mule deer shed. The spike blacktail shed was in the road in a walk in area, only about a 3" shed, fits in the palm of the hand. Lucky find! Spike sheds are a good judge of how sheddy your eyes are!
-
I found a bleached out muley spike a few years ago. My buddy found a spike elk. Both in the fall while out hunting.
-
Found a set once
-
I have a spike from up by Newport I found one year when I was about 17. It's two inches long and about an inch across. I was climbing a ridge that was pretty steep but I figured I would get a good view from a granite rock the size of a van I could see up above me. I was climbing and found a hillside trail bench with a nice rock to sit on and put my head down between my legs for a second and there it was! Lol! The area was known for heavy antlered bucks. It's a neat little button point.
-
That seems to be all I can find.
-
A little older but in good shape
-
Sure, need spikes for some project?
-
Fossil, nearly
-
The year of the average 4 pt in north Idaho, another one in the books… Wouldn’t find half my sheds without my aussie.
-
Another old one. Have seen a few shed out bucks so the freshies gotta be out there!
-
Hit steep and very deep country today…
-
Is that a cross between mule and whitetail ?
-
That's a very cool shed TeacherMan! I'm envious of your snow-free ground, I'm can't even get in to my areas yet. Keep posting your finds, I'm living vicariously through you :chuckle:
-
Sure, need spikes for some project?
I've never seen pictures of them posted before now. I have seen plenty of spikes with a deer still attached, witch made me wonder where they all go.
-

I actually had plans to shed hunt locally around my place Sunday, I spotted my big 200” WT Saturday night with a bald head bedded down. I really want to get in and find his head gear. Then it started snowing Saturday night 😜 So we hopped in the truck Sunday morning and went about 3 hrs south and hit the steep breaks of the Snake. I was shed hunting in a t shirt and 46 degree sunshine.

I put out several whitetail sheds that break into the 80s and a couple mule deer that break 100”.
-
Full disclosure, I’m not a shed hunter, but sometimes sheds find me! Found this 2 days ago, saw a forky yesterday with one horn, they are just starting to drop in southern Idaho.

-
Thats awesome teacherman. First fresh one of the year for me a few minutes ago, pretty nice blacktail time to find the other side...
-
That's a sweet photo right there! Great shed, but also captures how hard it is to find blacktail sheds!
-
Thanks, yes its hard to see them from more than a few feet away a lot of the time. Sheds weren't really on my mind this morning but I saw this south facing knob so started scanning a bit and there it was!
-
Good job! Give us another pic of it close up. Looks like a good one!

I had the third in the world for a decade or two at 93 and change, so that would be interesting. I guess that was typical so you could be talking NT.
-
Not huge, but a day 1 shooter for me :chuckle: never did find the other side. I'm close by today again but still no luck
-
Yeah that's a shooter any day! Thanks for sharing!
-
Knee surgery yesterday is gunna keep me out of the woods for a while but picked up this set the other day

Great sheds Lewy

Awesome find. Wishing you well on knee surgery recovery!
-
Thanks. They are last years sheds in good shape. The majority of the bulls around here seem to drop the last week of march/first week of April
-
That's a stud Westside bull! Nice find

Definitely NT. My biggest mule deer typical is 86” and change. Biggest non typical would be in the 230” range if both sides matched equal in size with a 27” spread.
-
This was my superbowl 🤙🏼 Nothing like bringing my two best shed dogs and littles out into the woods shed hunting.
-
Some blackie sheds from the previous year. I saw a full shed buck right next to my parking spot but no freshies anywhere.
-
Some nice sheds

On the subject of spikes...

Couple bucks still packing at the cabin as of this afternoon
-
First blacktail shed
That is a really nice BT shed.
-
Great find casterlyrock!
-
Might not find as many sheds on the wet side but they sure are smaller :chuckle:
-
Ten feet apart both were right sides.
-
Well thats peculiar :o
-
Wow two righties! Those are beautiful chocolate too! Congrats
-
Bet you thought you had a set!!! Strange, twin brothers maybe
-
Ten feet apart both were right sides.
man those are some dark suckers
-
Pretty cool R10! I once found two fresh Md sheds in a bed from two different bucks
-
Totally thought they were a set. Couldn’t get them to line up correct then realized they were the same side.
This is the deer from the thinner antler.
-
The elk are still packing here, the black tails are not.
-
Lots of bucks still packing down here in the south. Been burning up a few old antlers though.
-
Ten feet apart both were right sides.
That's cool!!!!
-
Ten feet apart both were right sides.
That is a super cool find! Still a 0 on the scoreboard for me, almost all the bucks in my area are still packing both sides. Seems a little late for this area, but I'm sure that any day now I'll come across a freshie!

Awesome find lewy! That's a beautiful set, the color is incredible!
-
I finally found a couple the other day. Still seeing bucks with full headgear.
-
A year old but not really chewed on
-
FOUND IT! Walked 4.5 miles, crawled under sticker bushes and found the other side! So stoked. They ended up about 150 yards apart.

Nice

Only one today despite being in more deer sign than I’ve seen in a long time and seeing 25+ deer. I’m a terrible horn hunter tho…I always lose focus on horns and start looking for future hunting spots.

Some Issaquah blacktail sheds. Hard to find, you will never run into another blacktail shed hunter in the wetside woods, lol.

That's what it looks like around my area.
Better bring snowshoes.
-
Took the two kiddos out a few days ago for their first shed-hunting experience. After some hiking they each had success! Older sheds but they were so ecstatic…I didn’t even care if I found one.
-
Great smiles on their faces, looks like they're hooked!

another Issaquah blacktail,

Has all the qualities of a good spot, except I've never found morels in this particular part of the world. Lots of chanterelles though

I could go either way, there's a difference in the frame, and the pedicles best to keep hunting and maybe find two more sheds :chuckle:

Hmm, it does make me wonder, I was just thinking the pedicels could be different and still be the same deer. But they are a bit too different in size, haven't seen a difference that big in past sets. I looked all over heck so if they aren't matched up, someone might have the other sides. I'll have to look more. I don't see any differences with the frame though??

No doubt, gorgeous color for last year's sheds. Gotta love the Westside. Deep and dark

Look at the color of both antlers and the little nubs by the base. They don’t look anything alike. Forget about size. Why would a deer rub his right antler a lot more than his left? Look at the 2 point set a couple posts above for comparison.

Stomped around the central cascades, east side around 3,300’ today. Saw a group of about 50 elk… I only saw four bulls (rags) in the group, and all of them were still packing.
-
bumped a bull today on the west side , around 1000' still packing.

Every time I see a spike shed I am more amazed that they can be found

Found this heavy guy back in Feb

Found this one in Minot Peak yesterday. was leaning up against a young alder. Like he'd knocked it off by rubbing on it.

Sure is! All I saw was the 2 back tines sticking out of grass, so I freaked when I saw the rest. During summer its usually waist high grass, it spent its time covered and is the darkest one I have so far.

I know these posts are older but I came across this pic recently. If they were side by side I'd never guess it was a set. A buck a buddy shot a few years ago was like this too. Completely different shape, and even the little bumps around the bases were different.

There's been quite a few on the Facebook shed hunting page.

Best single day we have had in a few years. 3 deer and one elk. None are fresh but three are in great shape.
-
Picked up a couple nice ones today, one fresh one a year old. Didn't get any atl pictures, it was so wet I couldn't take my phone out if the sandwich bag it was in :chuckle:

Like in this pic it would be hard to say for sure.
-
they are fresh, I know they look a little light in the photo but they are this year. Maybe they dropped early dec?? I will try and get better pics later tonight, would try a video but that never works on here for me. I'm just not sure if deer pedicles are exactly the same size or not on deer, I know these are slightly different size.

I was referring to the dead head above. I know your sheds are fresh and the pedicles may or may not be similar but the horns will look similar if it’s a set. I think you’re missing my point. The coloring on a set will be similar because they have been sitting on the same deer head running on the same stuff all year. The two horns you found are not similar in color.
-
Here’s a couple elk sheds I found last week about 200 yards apart. They are similar but you can see they are not a match.

Hmm

yeah, I agree. Not sure they are still there, been all over and too many people doing the same thing anymore, sucks how popular antler hunting is.

Well, my 6th trip out was the one. Finally on the board for 2023.. nice little side by side set. I found them about 10 yards apart.

2 turkeys opening morning led to a change of plans to look for sheds. Found about 75ft apart, thankfully we had 4 guys to help find the match. Pictures don't do justice. I believe there from this year.

Dang! I think we need a couple more pics of those!!

My best find of the year so far. Have 2 wolf tags left that I’ve bought and going to put some footholds out for a few days in the vicinity of his carcass.
-
Nice find. Good luck on the wolves.
-
I've scooped a great volume of deer sheds this year. My labrador has brought me most of them, she's a stud!
My best this year though, was this 4 point, and I found it, not my dog :chuckle: That first pic is it strapped to my EXO 3200 pack, total unit of an antler.
I found one side, and my friend found the other side. He had them mounted on a skull for me and gifted me his side for my birthday. Best gift I've ever received.
Hard to know the true spread of this buck, but we scored it roughly 163"
-
3.5 yo lab for scale.

That's a good girl you have there phildo. One mine got a nose for birds his priorities were set. Any tips on making antlers more rewarding?
-
That's a good girl you have there phildo. One mine got a nose for birds his priorities were set. Any tips on making antlers more rewarding?
I made a chronic effort to play with her with antlers while she was getting started, and I always brought her out with me when I'd go shed hunting.
I used antler scent on antlers, and would make her sit and stay and I'd hide antlers around the house and say "find the shed!" and make her look through the whole house and all the smells inside the house to find the sheds and she began to bring them to me one by one. I also have sheds all over my house, and she will never grab them off a table or something unless I tell her to go get one. She knows they're not for her, unless I tell her it is. She absolutely LOVES smelling the bases/pedicel of the antlers, and I let her dig into it with her nose as much as she wants.
Whenever we go out on a shed mission, I bring a shed with me and when we get out of the truck, I show her the shed and say "this is what we're after!" and I'll let her see me go hide it, and then tell her to go get it. Then she knows what we're doing and knows we're not just out for a jolly ol' stroll in the woods.
Anytime I glass a shed, or see a shed before she gets to it, I lead her near it and make sure I'm giving her the "find the shed!" command and really gas her up and when she finally finds it, I give her a piece of jerky and really amp her up and get her excited and jumpy about it. I will never just pick up a shed with my hands anymore, I make her do it for each one I see.
Contrary to what a lot of people say, I will literally give her the tiny forky sheds as a treat and let her eat it at the end of the day so she not only wants to bring them to me for me, but so she can have a piece of the pie. She has not only developed a nose for the antlers, but the sight. I've seen her see the shed before she smells it and she gets jacked and runs to go get it. She will dig antlers up through snow and matted grass, so when she stops and digs, I let her discover what she was smelling.
Now she brings me sheds out of nowhere and I'll have absolutely zero clue where she got them from
-
Nice, thats a bruiser!

Found a good 6 pt this afternoon

Took a hike yesterday with my wife and found a few. I found the two larger ones she found the smaller ones snd the elk antler. Pretty good day.

Got a few good ones! It does not like to let me post pictures on this app, I’ve been trying for the last few months but you can see them on my YouTube channel @Colby Otto outdoors
Found my family’s record bull in April being a nice 6x6 then found several 5 points. I’ll keep trying to post pics but if it does not work and your still curious to see them check out my YouTube.
-
@Colby Otto take a screen shot of your pic and you should be able to post that. You can only post two of those at a time.
