Title: What is the best Travel Trailer?
Post by: jrebel on July 23, 2011, 11:11:44 PM
What is your opinion?

I really like the construction of Arctic Fox triailers.  I also need a trailer to be a true 4 season trailer.

What trailers do you, or have you, owned and how did they stand the test of time.  I do not want to buy junk and it seams there is a lot of junk out there.

Thanks

Johnny

I bought a used Arctic Fox about 4 years ago, just because from the research I did it was one of the only trailers that are made for winter use. I really haven't got a chance to use it as much as I'd like, and I can't really say it's the "best". But we haven't had any problems with it. It's a 1999 model, 25 footer.

We got a silver lite trailer and we like it a lot. I don't what you plan to use your trailer for but we got the 2 horse trailer with the living area. In the 6 years we've had it we've never had any problems. It's been to Reno a few times, Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming along with using it in Washington for hunting, camping, horse shows etc...It's nice to come in from a day of deer hunting and turn on the t.v. and watch some nascar or some football.

I own a outback with the four season package and we really like it. seems to do a pretty good job in the winter. Last year in late archery season it got down to -15  and it handled it fine. The dislikes with this trailer is the white walls and cabinet's and doors. It looks really good but after a long day of hunting wife gets a lil upset if you come in without striping down outside first because it shows all the dirt. I wanted an arctic fox but found a great deal on the outback plus the wife likes all the fancy options on the outback. You cant go wrong with the arctic fox prob the best all around trailer out there. :twocents:

I own a weekend warrior superlite toy hauler. It is goof for all 4 seasons. Oversize compartments on it for water and waste. Pulls great with my f250, pulls decently with an f150. The dislikes that I have on it, well there are really none.

Joe I was curious, do you know the weight of your toyhauler?

Airstream is the best. Then Arctic Fox, then Nash. Airstream's are expensive and heavy, but very well built. I think Arctic Fox and Nash are the best for the money. Good luck and have fun shopping.

I owned a sierra, made but forrest river a few years back. Bought it new. Had a few of the wall studs come loose in the first year and pushed the tin out. I got good service, but I don't think I would own another one, and would not recommend one either. Mine was not designed for the winter.

My best piece of advice, buy a slightly used trailer and let someone else take big value loss the first year. There are way to many quality used trailers out there to buy a new one.

Ashersdad

I have noticed the light / white cabinets in a lot of the newer trailers.  WTF were they thinking putting white in a camping trailer?  My kids would have those cabinets brown on the first trip.  I do see a lot of those Outbacks on the road these days.

WSU

We will use it alot during the summer because my wife is a teacher and I have a great schedule (24 hours of work 48 hours off).  I will also use it durring archery hunting season (early and late) that is why I want the four season.  I estimate we will use the trailer 10-15 times a year.

Thanks
Johnny

I have a 2004 Artic Fox 25ft trailer. Dry weight is 6800lbs. It is a great trailer. I researched a lot before I bought this one. It doesn't have a smear toilet (room to wipe) and I can stand in the shower without hitting my head. It will be for sale in January because I will be building a cabin on my property. $9500 if you want to wait.

How about 9000 right now???   :chuckle: :chuckle:  I may be interested if I haven't found one buy then.  I have noticed used arctic fox trailers are not as readily available as others.

Instead of starting a new thread on this subject, figured I’d revive this one. I was also curious what you guys thought was the best built travel trailer? It seems Arctic Fox is in the lead here, anything change since this post? We are looking for a quality newer trailer, tough to buy used, just don’t want hidden problems.

Take a look at Outdoors RV, they are "4 seasons" trailers. I haven't had any issues with mine so far and it has been used heavily since buying new in Sept 2017, including living in it in the mountains during winter. The construction quality seems to be better and they are pretty well insulated and usually come equipped with a freshwater tank heater and the furnace is ducted underneath to keep water from freezing. Although anything below 20F is a fight.

After this post, we ended up buying a 2012 Starcraft 256bh model and we have really enjoyed it.  It was a 4 season trailer and has proven to work very well in all weather conditions.

With that said.....we now have property with a cabin and community lake so we are going to sell the trailer....if anyone is interested.....because we just won't use it any more.

Don't be affraid to buy used...you will save a ton of money.  They lose so much money the minute you drive them off the lot.  Look for one that was stored under cover or inside.  Sun is worse on roofs than water / snow (within reason).  Make sure they were winterized yearly and overal taken care of.

Trailers are all poorly built in my opinion, we had a cheaper one before we upgraded and had one issue with it that was quickly fixed, our new fancy one i had about 10 thinkgs that needed fixed after hunting season finished.

Jayco is one name of a many that is manufactured / owned by Thor industries.  Starcraft is another one of their brands.  Look at a Jayco and a starcraft and they are built the exact same in most cases.

Google thor trailers, jayco, starcraft or lloyd bontrager.  Very interesting really.

bought a 2018 27' Winnebago travel trailer. Works great. We do a lot of winter camping at white pass for 4-6 days at a time for snowboarding. never had a problem with tanks freezing or anything yet. No complaints yet.

IIRC Outdoors RV are part of the Arctic Fox/Northland brands

I’ve had a couple TT. All have issues and are poorly made imho

Best I’ve seen fit finish and quality is Northland brands.
Especially for True 4 seasons.

I’ve checked out a few. They seem decent for the price but in my opinion they are built a lot cheaper than a lot of other brands.

What is the story with keystone trailers? looking at a cougar model, looks nice.
Title: Re: What is the best Travel Trailer?

I had been researching for the last year on a TT purchase.
We had some requirements we were not willing to skimp on with a baby and 2 year, so we were very selective in floor plan as well as build quality.  What I found in all my research was that OutdoorsRV is the highest quality, I feel like.  Next in line (in our price range) in no order seemed to be Lance and Keystone.  I was only researching trailers that are framed out of aluminum and fiberglass siding.  I did not want wood frame and aluminum siding.  One thing I do know is that no matter what, at some point you will have a water issue.  I do not want a water issue with wood.
OutdoorsRV have great floor plans but they are high priced trailer!
Even used, if you can find one, are higher than most anything else new.
Once I figured this out and knew that I had to stay within our budget, my search went to the Keystone Cougars.
We ended up finding a new one, that fit the bill of all out needs and desires a few weeks ago and made the purchase.
It had the largest fresh water tank for the length we wanted (besides OutdoorsRV)
True four season with enclosed bottom, heat ducted underneath, plus heat pads all on the tanks. Full size bunk beds so the kids can grow into them and also full grown adults can easily fit and roll around.  I am amazed how big they are.  I believe the mattress size is a full.  Bath tub for washing the baby for the next year or two.
I enjoy it so far, and look forward to many trips in it this year.
You will also find reviews that say they are horrible, but you will find those same reviews for every travel trailer brand.  I feel like the people that complain go into the travel trailer world without the right mental mindset of things will break and go down and need fixing, even on a brand new unit.  I had that mindset at the beginning but then switched after long research and camping with fols that own their own travel trailer.
I would recommend the keystone cougar and if you ever make it to the tricities, you are more than welcome to come check it out.

I'm on my second Keystone.

They are decent, but have issues just like all of them.

We went with them again on the second trailer because they offered a roof that wraps down onto the exterior wall, eliminating a major leak point.
They also use thicker aluminum framing (this is 3-4 years ago) than others we found.

I still wouldn't highly recommend them, as we have had issues with cupboard door hinges being cheap, window drains full of caulking, heating ducts that weren't connected, etc.  Basic stuff that should have been caught by quality control in my opinion.
This is with their "High End" Diamond Edition line too.  Supposed to be their Flagship offering at the time.

Great info, thank you very much.  I'm looking at a 2011 cougar, is that year ok, aluminum frame?  I also am afraid of rotten floors as our last trailer had two spots that rotted out.  What are key areas I should look at when I do check out a used trailer?  Where did you buy your new one and were you happy with the price?  what length, model did you buy and how much was it out the door?  We also want to stay within a certain price.  Thanks again

My neighbor has a cougar and they like it for the most part. The one weird thing about that model is apparently only certain trucks can park them. They get home, he tries to park it for 10 minutes, then his wife comes and gets me. I hook the trailer up and it parks fine. Seems to irritate him as he is sure he is doing it the same way I do. His wife seems to get a laugh out of it. Weird.  :dunno:

I cant answer to the used aspect and that year as we were looking newish to new.

Side note: another of our requirements was a curved roof.  The curve over a flat makes a huge difference outside with the elements but also inside head roof.  It's amazing.

I would look at all the seems on the outside of the trailer, then match those seems on the inside and take a look.  I personally feel like when looking used, you are looking for water damage 95% of the inspection.  Look for any crack or loose silicon around doors and windows where water can get in.  Get on top, if you can (The new Keystone cougar is built with a walkable roof, another huge plus for us) and look around the roof penetrations.  Water in, anywhere, will cause issues.

We bought at Camping World in Pasco, but I searched and was willing to purchase anywhere in the PacNW.  I called places in Spokane valley, Boise and central Oregon.  The central Oregon place (I cant remember) had the best price on the same trailer that pasco had.  They gave be a print out of an out the door price and I told them I was going to take that to Pasco, if they didn't match I was going to jump in the truck and make the 4 hour trip to Oregon to pick it up. I walked into the Pasco store, told them I was there to Purchase, I will be playing the best price game and I have no issues walking away on a "want" toy item, as this is not a "need" for us.  They understood my mindset and cut to the chase instantly with me.  I told them I had other options and was planning to head down to Oregon to buy.  The guy asked me exactly what it would take to keep my business in Pasco, I told him the final, out the door price.  He left and came back 10 minutes later with a price that was $49.99 under my price, shook his hand and made the deal.  My price was well under their online sale price you see on the website.

We ended up buying the Cougar 25BHSWE.
Key features we wanted were the full size bunks for kids and grown ups.
True 4 season.
*censored* AC unit for summer time midday kid naps
Tub
As large of water tank for me during hunting season.  I am allergic to dander so I take showers often if water is available.
Slide out for floor space as we have 3 large dogs as well.
Curved roof and ceiling.
Huge awning.
I have a long bed truck and needed a bumper pull as I have a canopy and live in the back of the truck 20 or so nights a year, not giving up my canopy for a 5th wheel. So, as short of a trailer as I could find that still met out requirements.  I would have liked to step up to the 27-28 footers to gain the couch in the slide out, but just not worth the additional length dragging it all through the forest, so 25 footer it was.

We bought a 31' Jayco jay Flight 2 yrs. ago, family of 5, pull it with my 1/2 ton. Love it. No issues, other than when my ground pole at home shorted and fried my electrical system in it.  nice and light, and roomy. My parents had a 36'5 Cougar 5th wheel. A beast to pull, and very luxurious inside.

When I was purchasing I had a hard time deciding on aluminum vs fibreglass. I ended up with aluminum due to the delaminating and discoloration of fiberglass.  Fiberglass will discolor and yellow over time.  It can also delaminate causeing the trailer to look like garbage.  Google delamination on trailers....we have all seen one driving down the road that looked like this.

I know this is 100% a preference thing as aluminum has it's own problems....but something to think about.

Delam is an issue for sure.  I had my last trailer get a small leak I didn’t know about and it bubbled the fiberglass. It was an easy fix but still an issue. Just have to stay on top of sealing them. Which goes for both types I suppose
The new leak test is worth the money.  100 bucks every other year or so is cheap
Insurance.

Alum frame, alum 1 piece roof.  Personally don't like the weight of new panel/fiber designs, I prefer alum sided.  Paid for as repairs will come.  That's the best to me.  Campers, well Bigfoot 1 piece fiber shells are best.

Been reading up on Dutchman, specifically the aspen model. Not too impressed so far which is too bad because they are nice inside and affordable for a new trailer.  I thought looking for a trailer would be fun, there is just too much to look at and a lot of cheap stuff out there, even new cheap junk. Hard to find a good quality used trailer for sale that's not more than 10 years old.  Going out today to a couple dealers to look, not looking forward to dealing with those sales guys.

The 2011 keystone cougar we looked at was decent, just asking too much. We stopped by south hill rv and looked at their forest river series.  Started w the higher end models and worked down from there, you can really tell the difference in their lower quality, junk! The search continues, I’d love to find a slightly used Arctic Fox. Congrats.

We stopped by south hill rv and looked at their forest river series.  Started w the higher end models and worked down from there, you can really tell the difference in their lower quality, junk! The search continues, I’d love to find a slightly used Arctic Fox. Congrats.

How much were they asking for the keystone?   How big was it.  If you don't mind me asking.
27’ one slide out, no bunks asking 18,000.  Pretty firm they said on price. Needs tires imo, they are 8 years old

I called, it’s a 23’ 2003, and they want 8,000 or best offer.  A bit too small for us, but sounds like a good buy if someone is looking for that size.

I don’t think you could go wrong with anything Northwood Mfg or Outdoor Rv makes. My wife and I bought our first trailer last spring after months of reading and looking for quality Rvs’ and We kept coming back to Northwood and Outdoor Rv. We bought a 2013 23’ Fox Mountain 5th wheel and love it. I’m not saying you have to buy these manufacturers but you should definitely look at them.

I think I'm screwed now, we only planned on spending up to 25,000.  But there really is nothing but junk in that price range.  I should have never went and looked at those Outdoor RV models, wow, those are great trailers.  The difference is night and day when you compare quality of an outdoor rv to a keystone or other models we looked at.  We got the guy down a little but still the price is just over 40,000.  And we still need a metal carport built for it.  Haven't pulled the trigger yet, going to show the wife the trailer today.  Sumner rv has some real good stuff.

I own an Outdoors RV Wind River. It is a 2012 model. I chose this brand because of the reputation of Northwoods and Arctic Fox. They build their own frames and are not lightweight trailers. There are lots of good things about these trailers but they are not the quality they make them out to be. They are built on an assembly line like most of the rest. Take a factory tour. Their quality control is mediocre but they do fix things as you work out the bugs. I had some pretty good issues with mine. They took care of the problems so that was good. But they use all the same materials as other manufacturers except maybe the frames.

I don't know a lot about these things, so take it for what its worth, but I've only ever seen one brand of trailer that still looks good after 10 years and that's Airstream.

I wouldn't say the outdoors rv is perfect, none are, but I've looked at 10 different outdoors rv models at the dealer so far and I've found only 1 thing wrong with one of them.  And that was an easy fix.  I have spent two weekends at the dealer in fife looking at various keystone trailers and every single one of them had stuff that needed fixed, every one!  I'm very impressed with outdoor and at this point I can't see buying anything else.  I could spend 25,000 on a OK trailer, or 45,000 on one that will last the rest of my life.  It's a very tough choice, still haven't pulled the trigger.  looked again last night with the wife, she is now also in love with the outdoor rv brand.

You can't compare a 25k trailer and a 45k trailer and expect the same quality.
Apples and Oranges

Keystone makes a really good quality Rv in their signature brands.
The Outback line has options and build qualities on par with, and some not offered by, Northwood mfg.  At a comparable price point.

Keystone makes a ton of lesser quality RV's.  I imagine because the sell a crap load of them.

So, would it cost $20,000 more to get a few repairs done over the cost of ownership that is not covered by warranty. There are tons of trailers out there that weren't near as expensive or built near as well that are still serving their owners superbly.

I don't care what brand you buy they all will fall apart or become outdated and then you will buy your last camper over and over.

If you have the money and that's what you want, that is the right camper.  You could argue for one price point or the other, or even point out that you could rent an awesome cabin for over 200 nights for the cost of some of them, but at the end of the day everyone has their priorities and wants and budgets.

I don't own one but have stayed in buddy's campers that cost from $15k - $$$$$$$+ and I had fun in all of them.

2013 Fox Mountain 235RLS $21500 made by Norhwood Mfg. This is the trailer we purchased last May, I’ll probably never be able to buy one of these new but I would never buy anything but Northwood Mfg or Outdoors RV. I saw numerous good deals on used travel trailers from these manufacturers last spring but my wife wanted a 5th wheel and I was fortunate to find this one. You can save a lot of money buying one a few years old and there’s many that are still like new. :twocents:

Thanks, sorry I didn't go back and read your post, I probably should.  Lots of good info on this thread.  I think I'm passing on the forest river, it's a very nice looking trailer inside but I just have a hard time trusting the build.  This search is a pain, but I'm the worst customer a business can ask for, I need all the research possible to feel comfortable.  Appreciate ALL the advise.

But we just didn't want to spend the money and decided with the keystone cougar model.  27' bunkhouse, from a dealer up in Burlington.  I really appreciate the info and help.  Now I need a metal shelter!!!

We almost got a ODR last summer, but man they are spendy. But once you have looked at them and researched them, it’s hard to look at others. We stayed 52 nights in our trailer last year, so we use it enough to justify upgrading. I want a outdoors Rv  real bad. I’ve thought about going down there and doing the tour. But that I’m sure want help make decision any easier.  Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Nash was made by same group.

Well, we got our new trailer home tonight, they charge 900+ to install batteries, propane tanks full, clean, wax and run everything. We get there to pick it up, 2 (hour drive), and it’s not detailed, not waxed, has shavings in the drawers, on the bed. But that’s stuff I can deal with at home, just want to get it home.  So, we get home, turn everything on, run furnace, fridge, and the water pump.  After going over it and finding little stuff that needs fixed, I notice water starting to run on the floor from underneath the main sink.   A fricken water leak!  It is leaking at both the cold water and hot water connections where the faucet connects to the water lines, so much for camping next weekend.  We knew there would be issues, but not water leaks!  Hopefully they fix it now!

Dang it, that sucks.
We took ours out this weekend.  Everything worked great and only have one issue that I will be taking the trailer back to the dealer for this week.
I suspect you will have the same issue, so I would add it to your list of fixes.
On the awning support that runs from the top of the trailer down, the manufacturer glued this support/track onto the side of the trailer.
I suspect glue was used because no one has any desire to screw more holes into a trailer.
Well, coming home, the glue failed and the awning support stuck out off the side of the trailer a foot riding the wind.
The top part where the actual awning rolls up and rest against the trailer is bolted on.
When I got home, I opened the awning to let it dry out and inspect this issue and noticed there are holes in the support/track for it to be bolted to the trailer to avoid this issue.
I will be dropping it off tomorrow and telling them to screw the awning on and seal it under warranty.
It would be like buying a new car and the trunk flapping in the wind on the way home from the dealer.
All in all though, that is a very small issue and we are still pleased and just waiting for the bigger stuff to stand out and be fixed if needed.

Dang, that sucks, I will have to take a look at it when I get home.  Thanks for the heads up, Why, Why, Why!!!!!!!!!!  Just a tiny bit of QC and this stuff wouldn't make it off the factory floor.
Title: Re: What is the best Travel Trailer?

The more I am thinking about this the more I am thinking this glued feature might be a good thing.
If I ever forgot to close it in a huge wind storm, I would want the glue to fail and have these supports/track rip off the glue instead of ripping holes in the side of the trailer.
BUT, I also don't want to drive down the road and have the glue fail, like what happened to me.
I will discuss with the dealer and service manager and see the best path.
I might just have them reglue it and see how long it last, then if it fails again, I will screw it on and be super anal about retracting the awning when it is out and windy.
catch 22 here.

I would not want my awning support to come unglued/unscrewed in a wind storm, just roll it up.

Think of the damage that thing could cause if it came loose.  Especially if it's attached to a rolled out awning, which would basically become a sail.

For all the reasons you guys are bringing up I would never buy a new rv. You can buy a two or three year old rv that someone else has worked all the bugs out and save lots of money and in many cases these trailers are still like brand new.  :twocents:

Looks good!

I dropped ours off at the dealer yesterday.  They looked at the awning support and said that glue only is not correct and they would correct the issue, no questions asked.
Heading out in 2 weeks for round 2, hoping to find all the bugs early on to get fixed.  So far, I have zero complaints and our only issues have been tiny; no expectation on it being absolutely perfect.

I’ll say this, I do NOT recommend buying from a camping world dealer, NO communication skills at all with that company!  The dealer in Burlington told me to get a hold of camping world in fife, every time I call the phone rings for 3 minutes then hangs up. So I emailed them 3 days ago and I’ve got one short email back asking if my trailer was still under warranty !!! Really!  I told them it was a new 2019 in my first email, haven’t heard from them in 2 days.  Screw camping world !!

Did you get all the bugs worked out and finally enjoying your purchase yet?

We have been enjoying our cougar and have zero regrets so far.  Going back out tomorrow again.
Everything has been working great and we are really putting it through it's paces. We have around 12 or so camping nights in it, as well as countless evenings drinking wine and kids playing while it's parked on the side of the house.

One thing I have done is thrown away the capital grill and replaced it.  That grill sucked and not having a closeable while cooking lid was dumb.
I removed the grill from the slides and installed a piece of 3/4" wood on the slides.  I then bought a pit boss portable grill to sit on the piece of wood.  I added some Velcro to strap the grill down while traveling and also removed the gas line from the capital grill and installed in on the pitboss so it is plumbed into the trailers propane.  The set up works great and the new grill is freaking awesome.  So much so, that I now use it at the house for dinners.
I would highly recommend the change if you plan to grill and use that little outdoor kitchen area.
I also removed the outdoor kitchen fridge.  As the one inside is plenty big and we will never use the outside one as it only runs on plug in power.  That space now holds a lot of cooking supplies as well as the bottles of water for the trip.
If I think about it, I will take some pictures this weekend to give you an idea.

I've had some issues with their service department as well, Burlington branch.

Fighting me on warranty work. Then when finally agreeing to it, they damaged my roof, and broke my toilet valve.
They fixed everything, but it took some butt chewing.

Their sales department has been great, but their service department sucks.  I don't use them anymore, if needed I use Al's in Bellingham or fix it myself.

I finally got a date to bring my trailer in for repairs, it’s on Monday Memorial Day.  Took forever!  I finally got stuff moving when I got on camping worlds Facebook page and gave them my thoughts.  We’ve been on two different trips and the last one I didn’t find anything else that needs attention.  Most of the fixes are small but need delt with, also want a different lock on the back door, I can pull it open without using the latch, want a dead bolt put in.  Window won’t open in the kitchen, screen needs fixed and there is a spot on the roof that didn’t get sealed!  Check your roof guys!

I saw something about this AFTER we bought it!  You almost need to research every company nowadays before you go shopping!

Still having troubles w camping world fixing our trailer, but we did get our RV cover put up the other day.  Cover your toys was decent, but he’s a middle man, I’d call west coast metal directly to see if you can save some money.
