riffe lake
« on: June 12, 2023, 05:08:18 PM »
Does anyone know how the boat ramp and fishing is at mossyrock camp ground was hoping to take my dad out fishing at riffe for fathers day in the boat. I know the fishing isnt that great from shore at the damn. Only caught one rainbow in two hours about two weeks ago. Not enough action for me  :chuckle: any input will be appreciated.

Good news is the ramp is in good shape.  Water level is up.  Bad news is- people aren’t catching a whole lot.  We caught several dinks a week ago and ran all over the lake- even all the way up to to river.  Seems there’s a thermocline at 25’ that may be messing things up.

Here is some info.  If you go up to the lake to fish the hwy12 side  fishing access don’t bother!  There was a rock slide in mid March that has blocked the walkway.  They have locked the gate and posted signs of “NO ACCESS”  closed!  There are also sign that state you will be arrested and jailed if trespassing.  I called Tacoma power they are trying to figure out how to make the area where the rock slide is safe so there are no more rockslides.   You can assess the south side of the dam.

From the boat ramp, head out around the island to the right. It opens to a bay, lots of small mouth in the shallows of the bay. Continue around the shoreline trolling from the point back and forth along the rocks where the primitive camps are. Use a figure "S" trolling pattern. My go to was a 1 oz. weight, snubber, 4 ft leader to a Double Whammy (with gamkatsu red hooks), top hook with pink Power bait Maggots (have to be pink), the bottom hook with white shoe peg corn or a night crawler tail threaded up the shank. You can add a Kokanee flasher (the silvers will be attracted), if they are not biting well.
It may take a couple hours or most of the day, but I can't remember not limiting.
Trolling the far shore can also be productive. Most times trolling by the primitive camps were all that was needed.

Swafford pond, across the street has exceptional largemouth fishing. I caught one just over 9 lbs there some years ago, fishing from a float tube along the shore. Electric motors only.

Change up color and find what's working.  Start with orange and green.  Dodger are productive but the mini flashers can be the trick.  Mini hoochies with a small blade or the weeding rings that are individual beads.

Around the corner past the bay is shallows up to a small rock cropping, go around it and fish shoreline.  Start at 20' but don't be afraid to go down as far as 45.  Middle of the lake east to west by the dam is good as well, a lot of people don't fish the middle, they are there
