Drew a 2021 Manastash muzzleloader cow tag
« on: June 12, 2021, 10:15:18 PM »
looking for any help or ideas on harvesting a cow in this unit. I took a nice bull in this unit in 2016 due to calling but cow elk might be a different approach! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’d be interested to hear more about your 2016 hunt I drew Observatory archery this year.

I drew the same tag.  I plan on doing as much scouting as I can.  Good luck!

My wife also drew that tag, we'll also be spending a lot of time in there scouting. It actually worked out well for us, we will be retired by the end of July and our new residents is just off the Manastash road.  Good luck to you and we'll probably see you up there.

Have you guys made it out scouting yet? Be warned, the mosquitos are terrible! We've hike up a few different drainages so far, donated lots of blood. Found this in one drainage, good sign ?

We've been hunting the Manashtash during the muzzy season for about 10 years now and our success has been pretty good but the last couple of years we've struck out on spikes. We camp and hunt in the area by up Quartz Mountain and we're usually able to find the elk but we might have to hit a half a dozen spots before we locate them. I think that if you guys are able to spend all of most of the season hunting you should have a pretty fair chance of finding some elk and filling those tags.
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies

So far the scouting hasn't gone as planned, Manastash Rd. is still closed, state land closed, and no camping, day use only on WDFW land, it's going to be interesting. We have been up other roads and  are finding encouraging sign but it is scary dry up there.

It's been over ten years ago now, but we took cows during the rifle season from the North Fork Manastash.  We would hunt from up around White Woman's Grave down through Robinson's Canyon or visa versa.  They seemed to travel in the bottom so we were on foot.  There was always snow back then and I'm not sure they would be that low these days.  It is always possible to find cows with last-year's calves anywhere in that unit as low as Durr Rd., but in small numbers.

Look around Jungle creek. 2800-4000 ft. I have been screwing around chasing muleys. I have seen 2 decent groups in here 1 bull had 12, the other had 18. 30 cows within  1sq mile area sounds like meat in the freezer. Called both bulls in just for fun. One was cautious came to 100, but never visible. The other was stupid, got him in to 20yds in the clear. Neither elk ever saw me. I hooked around both and saw their harems. Also across the road  around Mile 3.5 up RR there is a consistent Herd in the clear cuts every single morning. However they have dissappear since Labor day. Send me a pm. I'll shoot you some onX way points.

I just moved to the burg in June, and have been scouting this area alot. Wouldnt mind going out with someone else as i am a newb to hunting. Figured this area would see less pressure than the Naneum and Quilomene areas; so was getting acclimated out here. Pretty awesome as its a 40 min drive to Quartz Mtn where i usually park and walk around.
