Help pick an optic for a Henry
« on: December 23, 2024, 08:54:26 PM »
After lugging around my 31 inch suppressed 300wsm in the blacktail woods for a few years, I decided to give a lever gun a go. I have a Henry Long Ranger in 308 on the way. I’m looking to set this up for a sub 300 yard gun for the 40-100 yard shots that I typically shoot my blacktails in or the possible clear cut that I may encounter one, which is the main reason I chose 308 over 30-30.

I’ve been looking at optics. I love my Nightforces, most especially my NX8 4-32 on my 300. But for obvious reasons I want to bring this down a notch or 3 for the Henry.

A couple I have been looking at are the:
Maven RS2 2-10x38
Tract Toric 2-10x42
Nightforce SHV 3-30x42

I’ve never owned a Maven or Tract but have been reading nothing but great reviews.
The Maven’s biggest con appears to be poor eye relief. But comes in at 12 ounces and 12 inches.
The Tract has great eye relief but a tad longer and 6 ounces heavier.
The NF is bombproof, is the shortest, but comes in at 22 oz and only slightly better eye relief than the Maven. Has illuminated reticle.

These are all second focal plane, which I am used to, and like the heavier reticles.

I’ve looked at some LPVOS, just not sure how I feel about them.

Any insight or suggestions to help me one way or another would be awesome. Obvious goals are a compact scope that I can shoot blacktails in the neck at 40 yards and out to 300 or so if need be.

Thanks in advance!

I think you'd be OK with up to 10x for deer up to 300yds, depending on your needs/wants. Personally I like to get as large of objective as possible but, if your goal is variable power for up to 300yds for large game, you may enjoy the lesser amount of weight with a LVPO, and you could still get a Nightforce. Of course, there's also Trijicon.

Thanks! yah I’m trying to stay away from objectives over the low 40’s to keep the scope as low as possible on the rifle too

Don't even need 40mm at lower powers.  Or even cranked up for your rare 300 if not low light.  The large objectives come into play at higher powers coupled with lower light levels.
