Time to play guess the score!!
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:07:49 PM »
O.K.  Here is my 1995 mule deer from Grant County.  I have never in my life scored an animal, but I was moving the horns in my garage and curiosity got the best of me.  So what are your guesses?  Lets go with net since this only had 2-6/8 for deductions.  Special thanks to my buddies kid Logan for giving you guys some perspective.

I'll post the story and score sometime tomorrow.

Here are the horns on the wall above a big 3 point.  The 3 point was over 300 lbs.  Not officially weighed, but it was huge.  This 4 point yielded 120 lbs of boned out meat.

I was thinking right along those lines maybe even 145 but the wall is throwing me off. I am assuming those are 16" centers the nails are in which would make it a little wider than I was thinking, I am much better when its on the animal, these kind are hard in pictures. If I could look at them on the wall it would be much easier.

I'll give you guys some help.

Outside spread was 25 4/8
Main Beams were 21 1/8

I could have sworn this taped out at 26-1/2" when it was shot, but I don't know if they would shrink that much over the last 13 years.

G2's 11-4/8....I remeasured again by actually using some masking tape to help me out on the curves.  I am confidant that the score is very accurate now....Answer at 3:30

This may help you guys more than the G2 length.

H1 (bases) were 5 and 4-7/8

144 7/8

The award goes to Michelle for being closest without any hints.  Mray gets honorable mention.

The first time I taped it out I got 111-5/8's.  I was really bummed, but I had totally messed it up.  Then I found a youtube video and got everything straightened out.

Here is the story on this guy.

I had scouted around the area for a couple of months prior to the rifle opener.  The week before opening day I was driving along a gravel road and had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting this deer.  He took a few leaps into the adjacent CRP and then stood there with a smug look on his face for about 5 minutes and only 40 yards off the road, before deciding to meander off to get fatter.  Through my rolled down window I actually told him that he was mine and I would be back for him.  He didn't act too impressed.

I glassed over the same area the morning and evening the day before opening morning and didn't see him.  I was hunting with my college roommate and my Dad's best friend.  This was the first season not hunting with my Dad who had died the previous year.  We were going to make a push through some nice pockets and draws that led out of an alfalfa field where I guessed this guy was feeding and hanging out.

Opening morning we had walked in about a mile when he jumps up from a bed about 60 yards in front of me and my roommate.  I pull up and shoot him in the back of the neck with my .25-06.  He was below me and heading straight away.  He drops and acts like he is trying to get up and his body is now broadside to me.  I put one through the lungs for insurance.  My roommate pulls up on the downed deer and shoots at it three times with his .243.  Finally he hears me telling him to stop shooting, it is dead.  We walk up to him and he ask me if he got it or if I shot it?  This was his first time hunting and he was fully adrenalized.  Once he took a few deep breaths he realized what had happened and that the deer was knocked down before he shot.  (skinning it out later we only found two bullet holes).  I gutted him out and we started dragging him towards a field.  I went back for the truck and we were able to drive to within 25 yards of him.  To tell you the truth I didn't get really excited.  The next day my buddy tagged out on a spike and I was way more excited for his first deer than this guy, because they approached us from a long ways out and he missed his first two shots.  However, as the years go by I appreciate this one more and more, and I have to think that my Dad had a hand in making sure this was placed in front of me.

Thanks for that  8) but it's all good I was just playing besides if I told you guy's how I come up with my scores you would laugh (kinda unconventional no science involved in my guesses) so if I were to try and use anyone's hints I'd probably be farther off than I allready am!  :P

He must have a hoodoo voodoo system where he consults the spirit of the animal.  Either way it seems to be pretty effective.

Thanks :chuckle: That's funny! No I don't have to resort to a higher being!  :chuckle: But I kinda envision guy's sitting down with a pencil and trying to put down some numbers. But I sometimes just look at it and throw out the first number that comes into my little pea brain and other times I compare what I'm looking at to the file of known bucks in my head and what they have scored and go with the number that I feel is the closest! ... See I told ya you would laugh at me!  :chuckle:
