Coastal's little Coastal BT
« on: October 20, 2012, 09:07:02 PM »
I couldn't pass up this little swamp buck.  Young deer, but sporting some decent head gear.  I originally intented on walking in to this area with my self climber tree stand but after getting hung up in the brush over and over, and listening to it clank around on by back, I said piss on it and left it on my trail.  I'm glad I did because it wasn't much further before I walked out in to the first opening and saw a little spike buck.  I decided to let that little guy walk and it ended up paying off.  After another 75 yds I came up on this guy.   There must have been some brush obstructing my shooting lane because my first shot went right through the base of his ear.  He took about two hops and stopped right in the wide open...mistake...boom.

It was definitely one of those days that started off miserable.  Everything was telling me not to go hunting...but as usual I didn't listen.  I was excited that it was raining, but by the time I started walking in it cleared up and there was nothing but blue sky and a dead calm.  I was at least fortunate enough to have the wind in my favor.

I didn't see any does near by, but this buck was certainly taking his agression out on every little cedar tree in the area.  When it comes to BT's I'm typically not very picky, but this one was a little bitter sweet because I killed him not 50 yds from where I've been finding monster shed antlers the last few years.  Some day I'll out smart the big guy.  The pack out was only about 900 yds, but about 500yds of it was through some really nasty cedar slash, reprod, and crab apple.  I ended up quartering and skinning it and just made two trips out of it...two long, miserable, soaking wet trips, but man was it worth it.

Nice Buck Coastal  Good story also. It's cool when day starts out a bit off, and ends with a nice BT.

Nice Blacktail
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter
