whats a good muzzle brake?
« on: May 26, 2013, 12:05:04 PM »
Thinking about a brake for 300wm. My wife is gonna hunt with it. I am gonna work some reduced loads too. What's a good brake and what's it gonna cost?  Thanks!

Vais is all I have ever used.  Turned a .338 WM into a *censored* cat..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Do you plan on hunting prone in dusty areas at all?

Westside blacktail is what she will be shooting at. With shooting sticks, if there's time. No prone shooting. Also any recommend a gun smith in pierce county. She can handle recoil good, but if I can save her from that magnum punch, she will shoot more. :bfg:

One of my hunting partners has a muzzy brake and when he shoots his gun, It makes my ears hurt and they hurt for a while. I hate his muzzy brake when I'm with him and he shoots something, waaaayyy to loud. He also has a .300win mag. I'm sure you don't want my opinion but here it is, the only time she will notice the kick is when you guys are at the range, when it comes to shooting an animal she won't even notice. Not trying to be a know it all, just wanted to let you know that the muzzy brake can be extremely loud and painful in the field.

I appreciate your option no matter what it is  I am gonna have her try some min loads and a reduced load then I will go the brake route if the accuracy isnt there from those loads.

I've got a Defensive Edge brake on my Encore's 300wm barrel. Love it, except for the noise.

All of the side discharge brakes are goo. Holland, DE, Muscle Brake, and more. I'm a big fan of the Muscle Brake. I'm sure I've thrown this video up before, but it give a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of the Muscle Brake. Skip to about 3 minutes to go straight to the shooting.

I have a JP brake on my 308 and it cuts recoil way down... I can actually spot my own shots and watch my vapor trails with it... Cuts way down on the recoil as well... At ~$100 they are pretty affordable... All said and down with threading and install ran me about $200... Probably one of the best 30cal brakes on the market right now...

Jim See has sold the muzzle brake side of his business but I'm sure nothing has changed with the Muscle Brake's and they're just as good now as they were before.

Shawn Carlock, Defensive Edge, in Rathdrum Id. also makes a very good muzzle brake.

Kirby Allen, Allen Precision Shooting, has his pain killer line of muzzle brakes that work extremely well too.

Having used both baffle and radial type brakes I would NEVER use a radial brake again.

I've got a defensive edge brake on ly RUM. only other I have shot is the stock radial on a weatherby accumark. I like the baffle brakemore  because it doesn't blow bark or dirt n your face on the shot.

Palazzo precision makes the best I've seen

He just put a brake on my 7 mag and it is very nice work.  He also bedded the action, floated the barrel, and pillar bedded the stock.  Rather quick turn around also.
