Bucklucky Blacktail deer update .
« on: October 12, 2008, 09:17:13 AM »
Went on a 6 mile hike yesterday, and it was 85% cross-country. Through timber, 18 year old re-proad, down small drainages, along a creek, through meadows. Along some rock bluffs , above some rock bluffs, and all I saw was 1 doe. Yesterday was only a scouting trip really, early in the season is when I really put on the miles looking for good buck sign, mainly rubs and good rub lines.I only hunted till noon, usually I would have hunted all day, just didnt see any reason to waist more energy. I didnt find 1 fresh buck rub which is pretty normal in my spot. It should start picking up here mid to late week I suspect. Once I start seeing these rubs I will usually start seeing where bucks start sparring in the trails and roads. Then it will be game on! Cant wait for the weather to roll in, and the bucks start rutting! Untill then I will just be scouting ;). I plan on doing alot of rattling this year. I want to call another buck in and kill it. Thats a fun way to put a buck down ! I didnt go hunting today, just cant stand hunting blacktails in the sun. Come on rain and wind!!

I went out and saw nothing but 3 does yesterday. I spent almost all day out. Other than those deer I only saw a few magpies and more hunters than deer. Maybe I should go bag another bear instead.

I went out yesterday to check for rubs, etc.  found a few but no traditional rub "refreshening".  I did find an obvious sparring spot where the ground was all chewed up in a 10 yard diameter area littered with deer prints and scuffs.  Here are a couple pics from yesterday's hike.

Thanks.  So much bear sign around too, I'm wondering how that is affecting the concentrations of deer in my hunting areas.  I've got three different bears on my trailcams and it seems that every other tree has been stripped.  I found four new maple peels in a 100 yard area.

Sounds like you better work on killing some bears too  :chuckle:.

I'll try and take pictures of the old rubs and sign that I see. It will make the post more interesting. I did find some peel from this spring also.
