« on: October 17, 2008, 08:03:59 AM »
Ok so dont ask me how i ended up with two pairs of brand new boots, but lets just say when UPS says that your package had to be rescheduled they dont really mean it.
Anyways i have two good pairs of boots and i thought i would just ask my boys what they thought about either one before i take one back.

I'd go with which pair fits your best and feels right for YOU.

Personally, I like Danner Pronghorn and GTX boots.  Never been a Rocky fan and haven't tried Wolverines for 20 years.   Wolverine has the reputatino for quality boots.  I think Rocky has improved as a brand over the past 5 years or so, in terms of quality.

But - keep the pair that fit the best on your feet.

I love Danner's.  I had a pair many years ago, about every 4 years or so, I would send them back for new soles.  I finally wore out the uppers, and just can not get the wife to agree to let me spend 300 bucks on a pair of "hiking boots" (her words)... :chuckle: :chuckle: :bash:

shoebuy.com screwed me on shipping. when the boots got here i "owed" the postal service 35 euro's. ($50)  >:( i contacted them about it and they wouldn't help me with it.

I have the wolverine hawthornes and i like them, i gave them the workout this past week, and un-intentionally stepped in a creek in about 4 inches of water and they did not leak at all-they worked great for me great traction while traversing shale hillsides. My feet did get a little sweaty tho with the thinsulate, but i never had a cold feet at all and the temps got down there a bit.

I had a pair of rockies 1000 gram insulation and they said waterproof on the toungue on the outside.  they should have said sponge that will fill your socks with water.

I believe it was a bad experience and that they were a good boot and i just got a fluke.  that said i took em back, told em they leaked, they tried getting me a different pair, i told em dont bother and if they wanna keep my business they will refund me.  Cashier told me that was the 10th boot returned that week. They were the camo, not sure what model.

I opted for the cabelas outfitter series 12" 600 gram dry plus.  I can walk through a creekand as long as the tops 1" of the boot doesnt go underwater they dont get wet.  Im not a big fan of their sole, but i believe you can now get them in vibram for a few bucks more.  Huge believer now and i will probably get another pair when these wear out, if they where out.  2 seasons on em and still feel great!

I will be interested to see how you like your boots.  I would have went  a completely different route than those two options.  Let us know how they worked out.

I bought a pair of the Cabela's 10" 1,200 gram thinsulate boots and they are great!  These boots will keep your feet dry and warm and they are comfortable as hell.  The best part is that they are only $69.99.  The 10" ankle support is nice and these are sturdy boots.  You can't go wrong for $69 bucks

Rocky's crap and wolverine better. I have had two pairs of rockys that claimed gor-tex waterproo. BS! Those rockys were as waterproof as a sponge. Keep the wolverines, I have had a pair for 10yrs and they are still dry when i'm hunting in the wet nasty weather. Or you could send them both back and upgrade.

actually this is a funny story.
i kept the rockies cause they were much lighter and felt much better on my feet.
however after two weeks of hiking in the mud, snow, rain and dirt i had to send them back and they sent me a brand new pair.
i set them next to the camp fire to dry them out and the soles de-glued from the sole.
i didnt think they were that close and sure enough they had a recall on those boots and the bad glue they used to glue them.
BUT they fixed that problem and i have a brand new pair for next year and i like them alot.
the rockies are better in my opinion.
They are really a lot lighter than the others and seem to be great in the wet snow.

I was a danner guy for years(my last pair lasted 10yrs and 2 soles, and I still have them), but this summer I picked up a pair of Asolo Fugitive GTX and LOVE them. No break-in, and super comfy. So far I have put about 40 miles on them and no issues. The first outing was an early season elk hunt that included about 15 miles of hiking the first day, and packing out a bull the next, with not so much as a hot spot!

Sounds like you got a pair of winners there! If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it right? There are allot of fine boots on the market today. The first pair of boots I hunted in were my old military boots. They were simple leather boots, not gortex or insulated, but they fit my feet perfectly. I could hunt all week and never have a problem with blisters or rubs. I did suffer from cold, wet feet at times. When I got my first pair of gortex boots I was very impressed. My hunting boots are just that. I don't use them for anything else.

I second the Danner Pronghorns for comfort, warmth, and durability.  Lots of miles on mine and been thru all elements including saltwater and are still awesome.
