When and how did you tag out?
« on: July 29, 2013, 10:58:32 AM »
So with bear season right around the corner I figured I would see when and how you have tagged your bear. What time of day (morning/mid-day/evening) and how (glassing feeding areas/spot and stalk/calling)? This will be my first year going after a bear in August during the season instead of having the tag in my pocket just in case I see one while deer hunting. I have a nice area I have scouted with lots of poo, berries/clear cuts, and trail cam pics. I am debating on what time of day and what method I should focus on, so hopefully I can get some help.

I've shot bears first thing in the morning, mid to late morning, in the afternoon, and the evening.  All of them were eating berries (either huckleberries or blackberries) in August.

You can hunt all day, bears are feeding nonstop.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I shot mine at 8:10 am. I'd seen 3 that morning already feeding in huckle berries. It was so thick that it was hard to spot them, then get the scope on them. One was a real nice chocolate color. So after playing hide and seek with these 3 down in the nasty draw for an hour, one crosses the road behind me and walks down 50 yards to my left. Double lunged him and the dirty SOB ran 100+ yards straight down in that nasty hole.  :yike:  I didn't think that was very nice.  :bash:
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

Full moon or flashlite attached to the bow.........  Oh, wrong thread.....

Pretty much any time during legal hunting hours will suffice.  Preferably when its not 90-100 out for more than one reason.

Okay.....here is my secret...no joke. Hunt a bunch, help carry or load two...then....keep hunting. Once you get that down my best success has come from going in the morning, taking a short walk and shooting one in the black berries or off a side road.

I think like others have said....they feed all the time so if you go out mainly in the am...you are gonna shoot them in the am. Hunt where there are bears and you will connect eventually...just keep hunting.

I have shot them in the morning afternoon and evening. When it's really hot like it is in the early season I don't think a guy would catch to many out wondering around. Later in the season we have seen more out during mid day. I have killed them by calling and spot and stalk hunting.

I have shot bears mid morning to the afternoon. My observation along with my trail cameras lead me to believe that deer and elk where I hunt are normally early morning and evening,  bears tend to be in between those times. Bears strike me in general like a lot of people, lots are not early risers. Just my opinion.

Thanks everyone for your input. It sounds like there is no real prime time, so I plan on hunting sun up to sun down. I have my trail cam pics and there isn't a consistent time on when the bears are showing up. I'll start high and glass, but just in case I'll bring my foxpro and some hand calls to get a bear's attention if I'm not seeing anything.

Good luck to everyone and I hope to see lots of bear pics posted in the 2013 bear thread! Maybe with some luck and determination I'll be able to post a pic too.
