10mm
« on: August 09, 2013, 08:16:51 PM »
I'm going up to scout a potential high hunt area for a few days next week and am considering picking up a bear tag for it. I don't really want to go through the hassle of dragging a rifle around all the time just in case but always carry the pistol.

Would you shoot a bear in a hunting situation with 10mm? If so, 200gr hard cast or 180gr Hornady xtp? Vital shot with the expanding ammo or shoulder shot with the hard cast? Or maybe a neck shot? I shoot the pistol with hunting accuracy out to about 75m without a rest, so a 50m shot should be within reason on live game.

Which 10mm pistol? Not that it matters. As long as the barrel is 4" in length.

Handguns:
Big game, except cougar, may be hunted with
handguns with a minimum barrel length
of 4 inches per manufacturers specification,
and fire a minimum .24 caliber centerfire
cartridge. The minimum for cougar is a .22
caliber centerfire handgun. Rimfire handguns
are not legal for big game
Losing is natures' way of saying you suck.

I built a couple 10mm MP5's. They were devastating on Pigs.

I WAS WRONG  :sry:   I was thinking the opposite rule that doesn't allow me to use my .270 encore in a restricted area( i think it states that it specifically has to be a revolver type handgun) .

I reload both 200gr hard cast and 180gr xtp's so either one is available.

Haha I have a friend who won't go in the woods without his 10mm after being charged by a sow with cubs 2 years ago elk hunting. Talk about a grown man going soft at the knees

Yes it is legal in our state. Barrel has to be 4" in length. This is why I carry a 10. Not necessarily to hunt with but close quarters legal dispatch if needed.

After having the misfortune to have to kill a wounded bear with my Kimber .45 in 2010 I started to carry a G20 or G29 while in bear country. Maxed out 200 grn XTP's  :hello:

I hope I never have to do that again.

I'd still bring a rifle though.

How about an older SW 357 with a 6" barrel and Buffalo Bore 180 LFN on a lung/leg or CNS shot? I've been thinking about picking up a single action 44 but have this SW pistol that my grandad left to me a few years ago. It shoots great and I'm sure he'd be happy to know I'm using it.
