Anyone feel like taking an ignorant soldier from the east coast on a bear hunting trip with them?   :hello:

I certainly would if I had time, but I'm being a selfish bugger and heading off in a different direction.  Hope you get into one.

VxB,

I'd take ya, but I got no truck.

Are you signed up to hunt the Fort? There's some decent opportunity there.
You can get signed up, or maybe find a partner in your area, at the North West Adventure Center.

Bear hunting ain't hard, you just gotta go look for 'em.

If you get totally desperate gimme a holler, you can go take your gun for a walk with me and my gun.

No, I think you are placing too much importance on it.

If I had to guess, I'd say 98% of the bears taken over the last half dozen years, have been done so without the use of calling.

And in the years prior to that, calling for bears was basically unknown.

Most bears are shots of opportunity, by hunters on the move.
You are walking down a logging road, and suddenly there's a bear.

Next most common are spot and stalk bears, again a majority of the hunters are on the move when they spot the bear.

Calling isn't hard, and I honestly can't imagine you suck at it. At least not the waaa waaa part.

If you sound like something dying, or something mad, or just plain something interesting, animals will come to see what it is.

There's a lot of ways to blow a bear hunt before you even make a sound, and if you aren't going to blow it, you might not ever need to make a sound.

I guess I just suck at walking then...  :chuckle: kidding. I am just trying to make the most out of one seasons' worth of opportunity you know. I feel like the pressure is on and am wanting to do everything within my power to be successful, If I am skunked up here this year, I want no regrets.

VxB,

If I don't know anything else, about hunting, I know this.

You need to loose the feeling that you are under pressure, because it does not lead to success.

Get out and scout, if you see a bear while you are hunting, it's a bonus.

If you don't see a bear, you will at least see which berries are ripe and where they are, and which ones aren't ripe yet.
Which roads go where, and how much poop is in them.

If you take a grouse getter with you, you'll have that on your side, and take a bucket for blueberries too.

Bear hunting isn't something you make happen, without a bait bucket, it's something that happens to you.
Go out and just enjoy being out there, until it does.

Dude, I know y'all got's some teenie lil mountains down' there round Virginny... but you ain't got NOTHIN' like this.

Learn to look around, not look for a bear, maybe that will help with the pressure?

Oh trust me, I scout every day on my lunch break and after work. Ive marked berries black, blue, ras, apple trees, plum trees. I have probably found 15 different piles of bear crap. A few sets of tracks. And a partridge in a pear tree.

What did you mean by bucket for blue berries? Isnt it illegal to bait in this state?

you could try filling your pockets with blueberries, but thats apt to make a permanent purple mess in your pockets....ummm pick blueberries and put them in the bucket...why not, they're a great treat.

VxB,

Missouri... Perfect!

Okay while you are there, take a long look around.

One of the things my brother says all the time, after a deer hunt in Missouri, "Wow, they ain't got THAT in Missouri!"

He's found a new love for the high country, that he didn't know he had before.

We need to get you out of the Prairies down there on The Fort (as us local civilians call it), and up where the real bear hunting is.
Just like Fred, I might not be able to get you onto a bear, but I can at least show you some of Mother Nature's best handiwork while we try.

Bears can pick their own berries, the bucket is for you (and me).

Berries and ice cream is almost as good as seeing a bear (since I have no real desire to shoot one).

I cant go off the pavement in the Mustang, but I'd meet ya along I-90 somewhere (Hwy 18?) and take you to one of my spots, in yer truck. ;)

There's a rumor going around, that I've used a call before, so maybe I can help you with that too?
