17 OIL POINTS AND WHAT TO DO?
« on: May 01, 2015, 01:42:36 AM »
If you had 17 points and putting in for the  goat, sheep and moose what units would you put in  for? Knowing that you are not in the best shape. :dunno:
Grill it, fry it, smoke it or just eat it raw

Make your picks blindfolded and then say lots of prayers. Even with 17 points, you chances of drawing any of the OIL tags are very slim.  :sry:

:yeah:The odds for moose are crazy, for the most popular moose unit last year there was 1,132,670 names in the hat for 21 tags. But you have to apply to draw!  I would guess any unit for each species will get you an animal, lots of help here if you draw.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Even with max points your odds for moose are less than 2% and sheep & goat are less than 1% so  don't stress, odds are it won't matter what unit you pick.  :chuckle: Good luck though.

My  :twocents:. Chances are you are not going to get selected in all three in one year so don't ghost the points. Look at what units had the lowest applicant to tag ratio and then see if that is a hunt that you'd be willing to partake based on location and geography. Any goat hunt is going to be tough, I hope I can tag mine on the Brothers Wilderness before I hit 40. I've heard the Chelan area hunts are decent. For moose, I've heard some real good things on this forum about Bear Paw Outfitters. I think one of the guys is a moderator here. Anyhow, I'm sure he could give you some tips on moose units to put in for based on how hard of a hunt you're willing to take.

Get in line, 17 points isn't a guarantee, get in shape, for some reason goats and sheep live in steep country and moose, well its thick country, and they weigh a ton. That's a lot of pack trips. I would put in for areas you are most familiar with and or can scout easily if drawn.  Ease of the hunt is hard to measure.

if you are not in shape only go for moose..   do ghost points for the rest.  wait till you start working out then go for it.    otherwise you are wasting your time and money.  remember the points you have will be yours for life.     mike w

Apply apply apply. If you're extremely lucky, you will draw some day. When you do, go hunting. When you hunt, shoot the nicest animal you can.

Everything else can be worked out.

With the odds as low as they are, sitting out a year doesn't make sense.

I agree it can be a bit misleading.  If the "average" points for a draw is 15, that doesn't mean that 15 points is likely to win it.  It meant that the one guy who was drawn had 15 points.  There were hundreds or even thousands with 15, 16, 17......20 points that didn't get drawn.

I would apply and not worry about it.

The odds of drawing an OIL or Quality permit in Washington are extremely low.

The odds of drawing if you don't apply are even worse.

Points don't do a whole lot of good in the OIL categories.  Even with max points, your odds of drawing are going to go down every single year for the rest of your life because of the number of people applying and the exponential growth of "names in the hat" due to squared points.  I did the math last year and with max points, you were still looking at less than 1% draw odds for nearly all OIL hunts.  I extrapolated the data to 5 years in the future and max point holder's odds would have dropped to less than 0.5%.  Just apply and hope for the best!

I just looked it up, for moose, the draw odds for 17 points or greater (17, 18, 19, 20, 21) last year were 1.9% (16/848).  The five guys with 21 points drew 0 tags.  The 8 guys with 20 points also whiffed.  Most OIL seemed to be in the 1-2% range for 17 points on up.

All you need to know has been shared in this thread.  If poor health is a major concern then skip the goat tags, none of those are in easy country.  Most of our sheep can be found in relatively reasonable access areas.  Get the tag and come back on here, the more you are on here, the more you are likely to find all the help you'll ever need on an OIL tag.  Lots of guys would love to help out, even those who have drawn the OIL tags like to get back after those critters and pack meat too.
