Coyote hunting last weekend...
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:10:42 PM »
I had someone drop me off on one of our local river. I jumped in my kayak and paddled down to a >500 acre plot of public land that is only accessible via the river. I was carrying my 12ga with #4 buck.

Being that it's late Spring and the evenings are light till 8:30PM or so, I was able to set up my camp (no fire or cooking), and make my way over to a likely looking spot and turn on the electronic predator caller. I was able to sit 20 to 30 minutes at 3 different spots... didn't see any coyotes.

Tent right next to an elk bed:

Set the alarm for 5:00AM and set a half dozen more stands.

Near the pastures:

Near the river:

Near some breaks:

And some pastures:

I didn't see any Coyotes. But I did see one big elk:

I ended up calling it a day about 1:00PM Saturday. Good times. Out paddling with the Kayak and doing a bunch of coyote calling, camping, etc...

Sunday, I was out by North Bend with the wife and we spotted a coyote in a field... I was like, where they hell were you yesterday.

Looking forward to next weekend.

Keep after them.   Did you see any sign? Scat or scrapes?  Normally when I go hunt a new area the first few trips are scouting only no calling. I want to have a good idea where they're travel areas are. Where they howl from at night.

I saw a few scat piles and tracks on the sandbars of the river. I was surprised to not get any response to calling. I did some male and female howls as well as various distress calls spaced apart from the howls... didn't hear any response whatsoever in the PM or the next AM.

Yep, I'll be out there next weekend.

Thanks.
