2015 Hunt Camp Eats
« on: September 04, 2015, 09:16:08 PM »
What are you guys eating at camp this year?  Any before hand prep?

These guys just went on the smoker 10 minutes ago.  Will pull them off tomorrow and pull them.  Vacuum seal 3-6 pound bags and freeze.  Will take to camp and place vacuum sealed bags in boiling water for 30 minutes, open and serve.  Should be enough for all of us for a big dinner and then lunch sand leftovers till it's gone.
Sounds like the others are bringing plenty to eat as well, we won't starve, thats for sure.  Will try and remember to get pictures of the food.  Who doesn't enjoy looking at food?

I'm going to bring some crab, other than that it is top ramen, a splurge with some mini ravioli, and summer sausage sandwiches for me. Maybe Lucky Charms for breakfast... I don't get too fancy when hunting as camp isn't where I spend the most time.  :)

For the wall tent pack in camps we always pre-cook dinners, pastas, casseroles, stews and the like to vacuum seal and reheat when we want them.
 Yours sounds pretty good though.

6 pounds of boiled peanuts soaking right now.  Come Monday they will hit the heat.  3 pounds will be original, just salt, and the other 3 pounds will be a salt old bay mix.  Should make a few days of snacks for the guys.  I can't freaking wait to get up there.
And Whit, I concur, cooking for/with everyone and just hanging out after the hunt, the fellowship and camaraderie is very enjoyable.

Damn I picked the wrong year not to be at camp.

I am going to make a venison meatloaf, spaghetti, homemade chicken noodle soup, pulled pork and of course my usual chicken and rice.

Two of the three butts are done and pulled. The third has a attitude but should be at temp in an hour or two. Once cooled, put it vacuum seal bags, dump in the juices that have settled and cooled and the fat removed from the top, then vacuum and freeze.

This is a new experimental rub. No black pepper or any sort of peppercorn in it. A lot of chilli powder and I felt like a lot of cayenne pepper, but tasting it doesn't have a lot of heat, still good though. Taste like pulled pork with a little sweetness mixed with a bowl of chilli flavor. I like it.

Looks real gods! The wife's out doing our shopping for our two week family elk hunt out of state. She always does real good with all our pre made frozen dinners. Lazania, pulled pork, venison stew, and lots more. Then if we do get an elk down and it gets late we gots Cup O Noodles and such for real quick eats and lots of carbs to burn off!
Slap some bacon on a biscut and lets go, were burrnin daylight!

Have you vacuum packed pulled pork before?  I've tried it a couple times and don't like how the finished product came out after reheating it like you're going to do.

This year,I'm going to try vacuuming the roast whole, reheating in hot water and pulling afterwards.

Yeah, done it a few times. Does change it some but I still dig it. One thing I do that I think helps a lot is if I know I'm going to freeze it I will smoke the butt in a foil tray. When it's done cover and pull off the smoker and let it rest in the tray for an hour. After an hour I'll pull the butt out and pull it. Then I will pour all the juice in the tray into a large cup and place in fridge. After a while the fat will separate and be a solid layer on top, scoop that out with a spoon and then pour the rest on the pulled meat. Vacuum seal and freeze.

When I am hunting alone...I enjoy Mountain House and some apples for my fresh fruit.  I'll pack cold snacks to keep me going through the day but other than that, it is whatever I can pour JetBoil'd water into.

If a Mountain House doesn't taste good to you then go hunt/hike for a few more hours  :chuckle:
