Youth (new) Kitsap 627 Gig Harbor Area...
« on: October 22, 2015, 08:31:29 AM »
Hi all.  My 11 year old son is starting to want to get into hunting with me and I was curious if there were any areas around the Crescent Valley DR NW area near Gig Harbor that are available to hunt.  This area would allow us a quick day trip here and there.  I can also swing Dewatto as my parents have property out there, so I'm aware of that area.  I've noticed a large chunk of state land off highway 16 by the burley Olalla transfer station... Is that land available?  Everything else appears to be private land.  I appreciate any input.  Thanks guys/gals.

I don't know Gig Harbor area so can't help you there, but if it's state land you can hunt it, as long as it's not owned by Washington State Parks.

Have to be careful with the firearm restriction zones.  if you want to travel a little but good day trip would be try the Olympic Resource Management land or DNR near Belfair.

There is some state land on the Key Penninsula labeled as "Key Peninsula Metropolitan Park Dist" and the one off highway 16 is labeled "State School Lands".... I thought I've heard the key peninsula one was available to hunt but am unsure of the "state school lands".  I've never seen that before...

State school lands would be DNR (Department of Natural Resources)

Not really, but just the word "park" makes me think it's not open for hunting.

Restrictions say "East of highway 16 originating at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to Gorst"  that eliminates all of port orchard and Olalla and area of Gig Harbor... well that sucks.

Don't hunt that DNR land near the transfer station. Its thick and not very big, No deer, surrounded by houses, day hikers etc..and the minute you set foot in it to hunt someone will call 911.

Your way better off in Dewatto.

Certainly agree that the area in Dewatto is far better for hunting. The firearm restriction limits all of the area east of 16. I did see a real nice 3x4 with eye guards on Thursday right off of Olalla Valley. I always consider a shotgun at my brothers place but cannot bring myself to ask to shoot his pet deer  :chuckle:. He does find an arrow or two almost every spring with his first mowing of the yard from bow hunters  :bash:.
