Hate yellow jackets when it's time to bone it out going to use deep woods off and rubber gloves to keep them at bay

Buy the Yellow jacket bait replacement packs and carry with you.   When you get one Take it 50 yards away down wind and open it up.

Just watch where you put your hands, they are just there to get a free meal. They are so preoccupied with eating fresh meat they won't bother you. Been doing it this way for years and haven't had a problem again just watch where you put your hands :twocents:

This always bothers me  because I swell up so bad when I get stung. I try to get the job wrapped up asap and into bags that I've treated with a cayenne pepper/citric acid blend which does wonders for keeping wasps and flies off the bags.

Try dragging the guts away from the animal asap...or if doing gutless just work super fast and bag stuff asap....place alil ways away from you if you can....it's not too big a issue if you work fast and keep a clean work sight

I remember back in the day when we still had to hike back to get our pack frames we left a gutted bull for about 2 hours......needless to say it was covered in bees

Kraut good thought. Last weekend i ran dry of yellow jacket attractant so I baited with fried stew meat and a 1/4 strip of raw bacon. I had so many Y jackets flying around it was dangerous. So. Im going to have attracting scent find a small sealed container to carry some meat in it then I won't have to deal with those ------- pests

I have more of an issue with them when I'm getting stuff out of the back of the truck or hooking up the goose neck. I hate getting stung on the under side of my arm! :o

Last fall in Twisp I got a deer and the darn things started coming around during skinning. I had a bottle of stuff I bought off the internet that keeps fly's off meat. Liquid.

Rubbed it on as I skinned . All the flying critters went away.

Vinegar rubbed into the hair will keep yellow jackets away. On the meat, use ground black pepper - same effect. Both being edible, this will have no negative effect on the flavor of the meat and the vinegar can reduce bacteria levels, bacteria which hastens decomposition/rotting. 1 lb of ground black pepper at Cash & Carry is about $4. I keep it and vinegar in a kill pack.

PAM spray is kryptonite to bees and flies. They will NOT land on it. Doesn't stop them from buzzing around though

Used vinegar on my bear a few years back and seem to work great. I also put it on my arms and neck to keep them away from me

Coop2424 and BULLBLASTER don't have a problem with yellow jackets, I'll just call them and they will take care of the downed animal.

BTW, little side note about the yellow jackets. They don't seem to discriminate between Kifaru and Mystery Ranch, they are more than happy to crawl under either brand and sting the back beneath it.

I usually gut it and sow the elk back up for the drag out (if I don't debone it). They seem to concentrate on the gut pile once its out.

Deboning,....well that's different. Like others mentioned, we use those wasp traps in camp, work pretty well. We've had holes drilled right into the hind quarters before from those yellow jackets. I always say I would hate to get hurt out there with an open wound and not be able to walk, those dang things would eat you alive.

If (and that's a big "if") I have success on elk, I plan to use the vinegar and pepper. And game bags. We also will probably be hauling quarters at night, when yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets retire to their nests.  Good information on this thread!

Just FYI, chili power seems to work better for me than ground pepper for those nasty airborne pests.  I've done the Pepsi challenge with both on my back porch (two small pieces of meat with chili powder on one and black pepper on the other).  The chili powder seemed to keep more bugs off of the meat than the regular black pepper.  I've also heard good things about cayenne pepper but haven't tried it.

Hope you baited all the pest down to Oregon so I don't have to deal with them here. Last two days I killed around 1'thousand of the little b---- at my place. And they keep on coming
