How do you carry extra shells?
« on: December 10, 2016, 07:29:34 AM »
How do you guys carry extra shells for quick reloads? I've been using a clip on chest rig but I think all that brass facing up is causing birds to flair..... thoughts?

build a better blind??
I don't think that brass sticking out of your waders is causing them to flair... I would look elsewhere.

I use the Columbia waterfowl jacket. It holds 14 shells which is perfect for the units with 15 shell limits.

If a shell belt is flaring birds your hide is not good.  I just keep shells in my pocket or set the box in front of you.  If you need to shoot that many shell that fast you will have a short hunt.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I keep 2 in the shotgun and two in my pocket.  the rest in my blind bag or in a neo shell holder along side to replenish from.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I agree perfectly good question. I used the 25 round belt straps and hook it in front of me on the blind. Got sick of boxes getting wet and falling apart.

Eat a bag or dicks ... I'm sorry I missed the memo declaring you gods gift to hunting.

To everyone else ...  thanks for the input. I'll probably just keep doing what I'm doing and hide a little better. Where I hunt there aren't any established blinds and not a ton of cover, so I'm pretty exposed. It is public land and I've pulled 5 limits in 5 trips so it's not like I'm completely failing.  Just new to waterfowling and looking to learn more.

I would be more concerned with hands and face over shells. I've been able to low stalk ducks and gees in open fields with good cammo.  :twocents:

I've hunted a lot of places like you described, and I can tell you shell storage can be a problem esp. if you're hunkering in the brush or standing in water. A bag is not very convenient to carry esp. if you need to stay a little bit mobile. Shell holders in a good coat or vest work. Pocket in waders works. I resorted to a belt and wear it high so it doesn't get wet when I'm standing in water. :twocents:

I also wear a shell belt. I put my ammo in brass down, not to hide the shine, rather to firmly secure them. Also have a five shot holder on the buttstock for goose loads.

In my pocket.  I have found that sticking individual shells in a sleeve or bandolier slows me down.

Shell belts are the sh!t, if the ducks are flaring off the brass on your belt they better be dying
