Depends if you are a one gun guy or a two gun guy.  If you are a one gun guy its a Browning BAR 30-06 (possibly a 7mm).  If you are a two gun guy, its a Browning BAR 270 win for deer and antelope and a Browning BAR 300 Win mag for Elk size game.  No need to carry a side arm in the field when you are rifle hunting. I carry enough gear that I wouldn't want the excess weight and bulk.  But that might be that I am an aggressive hunter and will put in 10 plus miles a day.  Just my two cents  :twocents:

There are plenty of aggressive hunter that put 10 miles a day plus on that carry a side arm. I can only tell you my personal experience. 2 time in my life already in the woods hunting. I have had a side arm save my butt. If I had tried to get my rifle off I would have been mauled. Once it was in my pack and once I had the strap across my body while climbing up some steep country. A few pounds of extra weight can be cheap life insurance is all I am saying

This year my combo of choice was my 6.5 stw and 44mag. A lot of times 300wsm and 357.

For all around big game in Washington I prefer my .338 with a 2x7 Leapold VariX II and a 6 Mil Dot.
As a surveyor my preferred side arm is my machete for the unruly vine maple.
I leave the side arm at home.
Having spent 35 years working in the woods, I see no need to pack a pistol.

.308 bolt action. Don't have a sidearm at the moment, sold to take care of a couple bills.

Mind sharing what happened?  Did the caliber make the difference between being mauled and walking away, or did simply having something handy that went boom work?

7mm-08 and bear spray.  I carry a 9mm Beretta Nano everyday everywhere, except when carrying a bigger gun ;).  I would 100 times rather spray a bear than wound one with my 9mm anyway...
