I never used to feel the need to carry a side arm until three years ago after a Deer hunt in Idaho. Helped my partner pack out his Deer and from the time we headed down the trail until we got to the truck we both felt like we were being followed. After we got unloaded and settled down on the tailgate for a much deserved beverage we heard a howl that we figured was only about 100 yards back up the trail we just came down. Now let me say this earlier that same year I went to Central B.C. and hunted Moose and watched a pack of Wolves take a very large Bull Moose down. I now carry a 10mm on my hip no matter if I have my 308 or my 300 WM with me. The side arm choice was what our guide in Canada carried. My wife now carries a 40 when she deer hunts with me.

I just bought some 9mm +p 147g HCFN ammo to carry.  Debating whether to carry the setup in .45ACP.  Probably carry bear spray too at some point.

i just don't want to buy and carry a wheel gun, though I realize less than .357 seems to be ineffective against bears.

Though I think an autoloader caliber might be effective against cougars or wolves.

Plus there's something to say about a loud boom against either of the three animals, in terms of stopping them.

30-06. I am from PA. If I were buying now(I am 68) I would look to a mag. My pistol is a .480 ruger super redhawk 9" w/ burris 2 to 7. My son has the .454 casull version. When you pull the trigger you think you were kicked by a mule.
