Colockum Wintering Grounds
« on: January 15, 2017, 10:03:34 PM »
Where do the elk from the Colockum herd winter?

There aren't any feed stations north of I-90 to my knowledge that would concentrate them. Got into the mule deer thick up Coleman Canyon this past weekend but didn't see any sign of elk from the gate at Naneum Ridge State Forest all the way to the top of the rim.

Had fun taking pictures of bulls at Joe Watt but would like to get into some photo ops that are a bit more natural.

Thanks fellas, I'll head over that way next time I'm in the neighborhood. There are some TOADS down at Watt this year with all the snow, guessing the Colockum herd is the same.

The flats across from Crescent Bar as well. I've seen a few hundred head there before.

Most of the elk head for the petrified forest on the old vantage highway. I believe the park is closed right now.pm me if you want specifics I'm not gonna publicly post where the big bulls tend to hang out right now on a public forum.

The majority of the Colockum elk herd winter in the Quilomene GMU, with most of the rest in the Teanaway and Mission GMUs.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
