Shelby, Montana Deer quality????
« on: March 30, 2017, 06:00:44 AM »
Kinda Pissed after finding out my good friend of 30 years has been holding out on me.
He has uncles just outside Shelby, Mt that have huge amounts of land. Well  , now that I have gotten him into hunting he says his Uncles have no problem with us coming over and shooting some animals.
Anyone ever Hunt around there have any pics so I can see what kind of quality of deer I will have to look forward to?
Any elk pics would work too.
If its brown knock it down

That's some premium elk country over there on the eastern front. Especially if it's private. I'm sure there's some good bucks too.

You better let me assess if this year and see if it's worth making the trip over there :chuckle:

I hunted 30,000 acres of private land about 20 miles east of Shelby (my great uncles ranch) on the north side of the Tiber reservior and there were a few big bucks but they didn't have a lot of mass, I was told the Sweetgrass hills to the north have some monsters. the three bucks in my profile picture on here were from that property.

There were a crap load of deer and antelope there. One of my partners saw a buck that he said would go 180" but he didn't shoot it because it was the first day.

Ya, I wouldn't shoot a 180 buck on the first day either! :chuckle:

If he has enough land, he can do a landowner  sponsor and you two would be a  guarantee draw. I did it for many years

A 180 is unlikely there - great deer but central MT not known generally for thick heavy colorado type antlers. Great bucks nonetheless!

I have hunted that general area off and on for the last 6 years. Like alot of eastern Montana that country is still recovering from the die off about three years ago especially the whitetail. I haven't seen a real 180 buck ever while hunting up there but plenty of your typical 20-22" pinchy Montana bucks with a few bigger once in awhile. Private access will help get on some better bucks I'm sure. Season closes earlier than most of the state so that does help buck survival but there is plenty of hunting pressure like everywhere. You have to draw a bull tag up there or else its cow only and that bull tag is hard to get, at least for me.
