Katahdin Sheep
« on: May 12, 2017, 10:09:08 AM »
Well I am a sheep herder.   :chuckle:  I got a nice year old full Katahdin ram and 4 adult ewes (one full Katahdin and 3 Katahdin/Barbados) and one 2 month old wether.  Got three more 3 month old Katahdin/Dorper ewes coming next month.

Nice!
Katahdin are nice hair sheep. I have 2 at this time. I had American Blackbelly sheep for many years but switched over to Katahdin sheep. The Blackbelly sheep sure look majestic but the rams seem to think their goal in life at 3 years old is to kill their owner. And they are hard on trees.
Katahdin taste great - as do the Blackbelly - but the Katahdin grow much faster.
My next breed to try is Dorper sheep.
Hair sheep are better than goats. They eat everything a goat will eat but they don't bellow for food all the time. They are much more quiet. I like quiet. And I like lamb meat over goat meat.

:yeah: Hair sheep are they way to go. I had a bunch for a few years. Much better eating then wool sheep for sure.
You do have to watch the rams they will blind side you and can break legs or hips for sure.

That sucks. My MiL has miniature donkeys out with her goats at all times to keep the coyotes out.   Not sure if I'd call them miniature but she's never lost a goat. There's about a bazillion coyotes around and I had a trail cam a mile or so away that had 5 different lions on it in one summer. So maybe they do work.

Thought about getting a dog to.live with the sheep?   There are several.good breeds that guard them and don't mess with the sheep.  Also, you in the market now for a couple more.  I will give you a mom and her lamb  if you are trying to establish a flock.

I have thought about it, I've used a guard donkey in the past as well as a llama, both were effective.  Thinking I may just lock them in at night and let them out in the morning.  I have an enclosed shelter I think will protect them.  That is a super nice offer, I may just take you up on that, but I need to make sure I have them protected before I bring over any others, would hate to bring them in and not have them adequately protected.  Thanks!!

I just picked up a couple wethered New Zealand Kiku goats. Hoping they tear up some blackberries.

My ram is now in his own pen.  He had a go at me this weekend.  I've been locking them up at night to keep them safe from the yotes.  I let them out and was walking behind the flock so I could get out of the pasture and I seen him pin his ears back.  I knew he was going to turn around and take a shot at me.  So I had already backed up a bit and was able to get into a part of the barn he can't reach.  He backed up a couple of times and lowered his head.  I hung out in the barn for a couple of minutes until the wife came out and distracted him with some grain so I could get out of the pasture.  He's 200 pounds, he could put a hurt on me.  So I fixed up the corral, and he's in there pouting and crying now because he can't get to the girls.  Much safer in the pasture now.  LOL

I've got a bunch of katahdin lambs available if your interested. After losing several to a cougar a couple years ago we got a guardian dog(great Pyrenees) and haven't had any problems with predators since.
