My Copalis adventures
« on: May 18, 2017, 02:19:59 PM »
Hi everyone!  I am having a lot of fun out here in Copalis.  I have been out here several times but without the slightest bit of sign. Also, I am a bear hunting rookie.  In my life I have seen several mt. lions, killed several deer, seen elk, goats, quite a few bobcats, but NEVER have I seen a bear in the wild (although I did get within 100 yards of one last deer season.)

I will post a few more pictures from my spring season later (and hopefully one with a bear in it) but can someone help me with this scat id?  It is less that 24 hours old (I was here last night and it wasn't here).  It seems too small to be bear, or at least a large bear, but it is full of plant material.

Fawns should be hitting the ground starting real soon.  Might try a call.

It had an awfully small diameter and I also found several other piles all smaller than this.  Will bears have such small poos?   :dunno: My dog leaves behind larger sign.

Cubs and smaller bears scat will be smaller. Might just be in an area with a few cubs and a sow.  Keep after it and you'll lay eyes on one. Walk those grass roads and blow on a fawn in distress call.

love to see the family pics involved with your hunt...trying to attach a couple pics to keep you interested in the area.  this is the 3 legged bear i shot in that area in 2010...keep at it..be patient...it will be like someone flipped the switch and it will turn on

I was ready to give up.  Now I am trying to figure out if I can fit in another hunt this season.  :chuckle:  You guys rock.  Thanks!

Don't give up. I tried to save all my hunting time til the bear started moving. How's that time.  Is your tag open til the 15th?  I only have a few more days to get it done.  Good luck!

Hunt off the Aloha Tavern gate hard they are in there...i put in the time last year and I got one off the 6006.6..its all about putting in the miles and being in the right place at the right time..when you have distance use your binos.  I don't have a tag this year but i work in the area and have seen  a good amount of sign off the 6009 even though they are doing a cedar salvage in the area.  These last few weeks should be good, use the tag get out and hunt!!  :IBCOOL:
FYI: this bear measured 6 foot and as I was field dressing him a bigger bear was watching me  :yike:

Thanks for your advice.  I hope to make it back over there next week.

The Aloha Tavern gate confused me a bit because when I tried that a couple weeks ago there was a postage stamp of Rayonier land and then it was another company's land with a no trespassing sign and a trail camera focused on the road.  I tried using the neighboring DNR land to get around that other company's land but it didn't work out so well.

Thanks for the advice about 6009, I don't think I have tried that road yet.

I keep hearing about this cedar work, what exactly does that mean?

THANK!!

Keep at it, now is the time. With the good weather, this weekend should be hot!
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!
