After 13 years I have finally drew a Desert tag.

Congrats on your tag.  My mind instantly thought oxymoron when I saw the title of the thread though.    I'm hoping you can connect.  Quality has really bit the dust out there.

My brother also drew the tag, early season archery.  I will be out there scouting and hitting the opening week with him.

Good luck. My son and I drew the permits for the early archery hunt the first year they were offered. Bring loads of water. That early archery season is way too early and hot for hunting in that area. Maybe by the end of the season it might cool down some as the season seems to be longer than it used to be. You might as well be walking around in hell. High heat and a zillion bugs. No snakes though, no rocks for them, just sand. We hunted hard but only got close enough for one shot on a small buck. I talked my son out of taking the shot. There are some big bucks in there but they can see you coming for a mile and are not very active if at all during the day. Hunt close to the crops fields and you might catch them on the move early morn or evening.

You must've got lucky - there are plenty of snakes there, especially near the water.   :yike:

Good tag for a average buck  No snakes  I have walked from C road to A , from C road to Dodson and all over and between
never seen a snake   Don't over look the little pockets of sage land  by a corn field  They love hanging in the corn

Game dept biologist told me no snakes in the Desert Unit when I hunted it in the first permit hunt many years ago. I never did see any and I have never seen any for many other hunting activities during warm periods in that unit. Their explanation was the lack of rocky areas. The unit is mostly sand and swampland.
