Would this work.....think it might
« on: June 28, 2017, 10:24:53 PM »
I am thinking about using a molasses tub, the type used for cattle, and was wondering if it would work for elk. I know they love molasses based bait, like sweet cob and figured that this MIGHT work and would last for a long time.

Anyone ever thought about this or actully do this?

Shockingly, I have found ZERO sign of bears and have ZERO pictures of bears.

Only because they haven't found it yet !
But when they do, consider the tub gonzo.

My vote is for a bear toy as well.  If they are relatively inexpensive, give it a try.

I've done it ants love it too. elk love it. make sure u put salt there too. In my experience elk on the Eastside are way more interested in salt and molasses than elk on the west side. I don't know why though???   I've had bear come to molasses licks. Contrary to what I used to believe elk are not scared of bear; at least in my experience. I've seen bear and elk in the same clear-cut. once the  bear start to get to the molasses they want to eat it not just lick it so they eat the plastic then it's gone fast but if you can get it out of the plastic and put it in a metal container the bear can only lick it. Anchor it to the ground and recess it as much as possible, otherwise once a bear finds it, it's gone in less than two weeks.  one time I was walking to my spot I had molasses tub and I found a huge what I believed to be was puke pile. About a half a gallon of molasses and bile. I believe it was a pile of throw-up and bile...idk?  but yeah man elk love molasses I don't think there will be a problem. u can also hang it by drilling a hole through it big washers and chain hang it high.

Seems really long. But I know the regs when it comes to baiting bears and the dos/don'ts. I'm not worried

I think it would work just fine. I also would secure it well as the bears will indeed find it. That alone may be a reason not to use it as the bears may prevent your target species from hanging around.

It was long. Much longer than it needed to be.

I kind of like the idea of hanging it. I wonder if you could get it to a magic height where bears would struggle getting to it, but elk could still lick it?

Be cool to get some cam pics of an elk rearing up to reach it.

Beer country is everywhere.
:fire.:

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Beer country is everywhere.

Never been a truer statement. I've found the Hamm's cans 8 miles into the wilderness that prove this is true.
