How many rounds do you carry in back country hunts?

usually 10-15 rounds for me.  I generally don't use many, but if you have a wreck or knock your gun and need to redial it they could come in handy.

2 mags with 4 each and then usually another 4 loose.  I used to take far less (4), but I had a scope issue once that gobbled 6 rounds to get figured out and luckily I was close to the truck.

6-8 rifle rounds for me.   Depending on rifle.  One has a magazine that holds 3 rounds, so I take two magazines.  The other is a trap door design that holds 4 rounds, so I fill that and have a sling that holds 4 rounds.  And keep a box of ammo in my vehicle should need be, I can always hike back to the rig.

My rifle holds 4 and I have one of those butt stock shell holders that holds 9. I carry one more round in my pocket because I'm superstitious about carrying 13. Having said that, when I was younger I hunted in Louisiana and they said never carry more than a few shells with you. I think having a few extra in case you have a problem is a good idea.

around 10.  A few for the hunt and some extra for emergency signal if needed.  I was taught as a kid that if you get lost fire a shot each minute for 3 minutes.  Universal distress signal.  I want at least 6 contingency rounds for this purpose alone.  Never needed them but I'm just conditioned to have them after all these years.

Backcountry? So, I'm assuming far enough that I don't want to hike back to the truck for anmo... in that case I like to have about 20 rounds. A gun with no ammo is pretty much worthless.

Now you got me curious as to weight vs. round count tradeoff.  I just weighed 20 rounds, without the box, and for my ammo that is 1.4lbs.

I carried 10 rounds of 7mm Mauser.  My reasoning for 10 was I carried 4 + 1 in the rifle and had an additional 5 for a reloading if I ever needed it.   Never fired more than 3 on any of the 20 years of high hunts.  I'd say the "mode" was either 0 rounds and no game bagged or 1 round (game bagged).  Rarely did I need more than the first round.  Once I fired 3.  miss, hit, miss.... drag deer back down hill.

On any full day hunt on foot or multi-day backpack hunt I normally carry the rifle loaded and enough to load it twice more after emptying it.   Whatever that count turns out to be for the rifle in use.

I've never shot any one animal that much but want to be prepared if things go bad and I have to chop at a wounded animal across open meadows.  My rifle holds four in the magazine, but it is tight to cycle so I normally carry it with three in the mag, so nine rounds.  If you carry with one in the pipe, make that 12 rounds.

On a week long backpack hunt I would double that, but have only done backpack hunts that long when a horse, plane or boat transported me to the hunt area.  Plus I have one round of cheap factory stuff in my front pocket for a finisher if ever needed, rather than finishing with a premium bullet handload.  So make that ten rounds total with current rifle.

I carry one four round mag in the rifle, another four round mag in my accessible pocket. In my pack I carry a plastic strip of 10 in a ziplock bag, for emergencies only.

20.  Never know, ran through 7-8 on a muley before.  Took one to the front shoulder two pass throughs in the boiler room, one behind diaphragm and he still covered 500 yards.  Animals are extremely tough at times.. also can be used for distress signal, food survival. If partners gun locks up he can use mine if tagged out, powder has many uses.  Just nice to have plenty.

Are we talking backpack hunting in wolf country? Can have a big impact on how many rounds I throw.

I was just thinking the same thing and saw your response.  Funny how tied we get to our favorite caliber.

Think of it this way guys, the more rounds you carry the more calories you are burning and the bigger the burger you can eat when you get out of the hills.  That's always how I thought of extra weight in my backpacking days.  I routinely carried 60-70 pound packs.  I've packed beer and even melons into the back country, much to the surprise of my backpacking buddies.

Same, except my mags hold 3 each.

Some interesting responses in this thread.  Makes me wonder how many times some of you guys plan to miss.

Yes, that is the only consideration.  There is no possibility you might bump your scope or lose a few or loan a few to a forgetful buddy.

In 53 years of hunting never needed more than 9 rounds ( generally 1 ) but hate the thought of being 5 miles in and running out of ammo when I could of thrown another 5 rounds in the bottom of the pack........
