I usually take my 20 gauge for grouse, but there have been times when I was in the woods during grouse season and only had my Ruger 22 pistol. Also have shot grouse with a Ruger 10/22, and if I were going to hunt grouse with a 22 that's the gun I would choose.

My 11 year old daughter may be going grouse hunting with me this year if she passes her hunter education course this week, and if she does she'll be using her little single shot Savage Rascal.

I always like using my win 410 but my go to is my ruger mark 1. I enjoy the challenge of it.

Back when I was a kid (a long time ago) all I knew was shooting grouse with a 22. Dad gave me a Remington model 521 in .22 lr. By the way, I still have this gun. We always carried this gun in the jeep " just in case" we saw a grouse, but we were usually deer hunting back then..

Today I take a shotgun. Not that the .22 isn't effective. But when I go out I am usually targeting grouse and I have the dogs with me. Using the shotgun has allowed me to get a second bird several times when it flushed after I have shot the first bird.

When we were kids, the go to gun was a O/U .22 & 20 gauge.

I carried a .22 Ruger single six for years during rifle elk.

Than a 20 ga behind the seat a few years. The last few years the grouse have fallen to my .410 ,Judge,Circuit Judge, or Bond Hand Cannons.

Hell ya!  First gun my pop got for us boys was a savage O/U 20 gauge/.22. Shot a TON of franklin, ruffled, and blue grouse with that combo

the 22 bird shot is really effective also, killed a couple rattle snakes with them a few weeks ago. gives you a little room for error on the aiming as well

I normally use the 20 gauge barrel on my TC Encore system.  I have one of those rare 20 smooth bore barrels.  If I can I use my favorite gun of all time which would be the CZ 452 FS.  Can take the head off a grouse every time within 60 yards.

My all time favorite grouse gun!
I also use a Single six, and a SP101, but the 22/45 is my favorite.

This year I'll also be packing my new to me Savage 22/20.

When i was 15 I spent two months worth of berry picking money to buy a brand new Savage model 24DL 22LR/20GA 3" chamber.  I shot the head off of a lot of grouse with open sights and that gun when I was a kid.   Rarely used the 20GA, 'cause even though I was deadly with the rifle I couldn't hit anything with the shotgun.   :yike:  It's still in the safe, but I don't use it any more.   :IBCOOL:

Between the two of us we have one good gun. I can't hit much with the .22 barrel on my 24.

Probably use my ruger mark III now that it finally got bloody. It's the only gun I have successfully killed anything with.

My fear with grouse is actually my own death, it's pretty rare I see those things until they are flushing right under my feet.

.16 gauge shotgun
similar to this one pictured.
Of course my dad using .22 bird shot killed a grouse a few times with his .22 pistol. If I did it I'd take my dads old .22 rifle loaded with bird shot and LR.

That aluminum barrel buckmark is beauty. I also love shooting grouse with my bull barrel MK IV ruger. I have a thing for 22's!

I've taken more grouse with a Ruger Mark II target model than any other weapon, second would be archery with a 1/2" washer behind a field point (poor man's judo).  A fair number with shotgun, a few with a .30-06 (crosshairs just above the head, otherwise you'll blow it up).  One each with my everyday carry .380s, a Ruger LCP and Sig P238.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Never owned a shotgun till this year. My dad started me at 8 with a marlin mod 60 and I killed everything with that gun till I bought a buddy's savage MKII and killed em with that till a few years ago. Now I've got a Chiappa 22/410 that took 2 dozen last year. 3 this year.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen
