Good work!  Mind sharing the unit?  There was a least 1 spike like that running around 360.  Last time I saw him was July though...

On the 7th day of my Peaches Ridge Bull hunt, I filled my first bull tag!  Caught him heading for the steeps.  They had been getting off the tops before day break.  Very thankful to the guys at camp for helping and sharing this great experience.

Well, the snow was the key.  I managed to log about 5 hunting days altogether between the weekends and some vacation days, and saw naught but a few cows and a single branched bull (and loads of my fellow walking highlighters) during the season.

I was hopeful with the weather system moving in the people would start moving away and the elk would start moving down, and that's exactly how it turned out!  Got out at dawn this morning and tracked some elk through the snow to the best of my meager abilities, and then suddenly, a cow bolts out from the brush about 40 yards away.  I threw my rifle to my shoulder not knowing if she was alone, and low and behold, a yearling spike pops out just as the cow runs off and BOOM.

Naturally, I then track the blood trail to some bushes and follow the tracks out of the bushes, no more blood, and like an idiot, I follow the tracks for more than a mile through a hell hole of a snowy boulder field.

Took me an hour to loop back around and the spike was just on the other side of the bushes, no more than 50 yds from where I shot him -- I had followed the lead cow's tracks.  My 7mm-08 hornady eld-x had hit the mark, passing through both lungs and the aorta.   Not bad for a snap shot :IBCOOL:.

HUGE thanks to my best friend Daniel and credit to the greatest neighbor a guy could ask for sharing spots and tips, not to mention help packing out.  And thanks to everyone on this forum for all the knowledge I've been gleaning.

This makes 2 spikes in 2 years of elk hunting.  I am the luckiest :censored: on the planet.

My brother was able to get it done yesterday for his first bull. 533 yards with his 6.5 Creedmore, recovered the bullet just inside the hide on the opposite shoulder. He was with 8 cows raking a tree.

How quickly did he go down with the 6.5? Been thinking about getting a 6.5 creedmore as my next rifle.

He didn’t go too far, he hit him a couple more times after the first shot to ensure of that. He shot his buck at 200 yards with it and I shot mine at like 20 and it performed flawlessly. He has the kimber hunter which seems to be an awesome light weight rifle. The barrel does heat up quick though.

Congrats on your elk. If you have a seat belt or some webbing sewn together in a circle with a metal ring in the middle putting each arm thru it and tying the rope to it out the back makes for an easier drag.

Brother got it done! 6-7 hours of cleaning and packing meat will wear you out! Hopefully my bull will come soon!

Had a great Tuesday morning. My buddy pushed a herd of about 20 right up to the bench I was hunting. This boy was in the lead. I thought for sure I was going to blow it. Fogged up scope, zoomed in to much, heart pounding. I pulled it together and put one through his heart. I still can't believe it. First WA Bull for me.
