Early archery..deer activity
« on: September 06, 2017, 11:28:26 AM »
Anyone else notice abnormal deer activity this year?
Normally when hunting this time of year the bucks have been in groups away from the does.
This year we have just seen a buck and doe together, not the regular groups.
What's the deal?

What species?
The Mule deer don't seem to be doing that.

The smaller 3 points, spikes and 2x3's are with the does. The bigger bucks are in bach groups. Deer activity is good, quick morning hunts followed by naps.

SE corner in the farm lands. Saw two good sized white tails they remained bedded all day. As evening came they didn't get up as it got dark.

Sounds about right. I'm not sure if the fire has them all off or what.

Blackie bucks are layin' low too.  Seeing a few does and yearlings.  Bachelor groups should be breaking up, I believe.

I didn't even see a deer opening weekend, between temps in the 90s, lots of smoke, and an abnormal amount of grouse hunters running around I saw nada.  Even in my areas well of the roads.

We were up high, we did decent grouse hunting, didn't notice a lot of hunters.
We did see a couple Moose.

Correction to my earlier post.  A reliable source states that BTs stay in bachelor groups until the rut (or pre-rut) starts. (Mid-October or so).

Saw a group of 6 mule bucks together up in GMU 101 Sherman last Sunday and Monday. A 4x4, two 3x2, one 2x2, and a small 1x1 didn't start moving around 8:30 am, then were bedded back down by 10.  :archery_smiley:

Dad saw a freaking toad last night. Was messing around with my estrous can on the back deck and kept hearing consistent crashing right by me in the woods. Must be unrelated.

Probably a bear.  You're lucky you didn't get et.   :chuckle:

We had just been shooting our bows, so I was dialed in and would have loved for a bear to step out  :chuckle:

We went and checked it out and found a huge trail and some nice rubs in the area. The more you know  :twocents:

I scouted the weekend of 8/26 & 8/27. Saw 16 bucks. Went to an area nearby the first scouting spot for the opening weekend. Between 8/31 & 9/3 I saw probably 15 - 18 bucks.
