Skykomish near Sultan
« on: September 09, 2017, 12:51:19 PM »
I haven't river fished for salmon since about 1997 and can't really remember what gear to use.  I'd like to do some fishing with my son near our new place.

All I remember was using spinning corkies behind a three way swivel with a weight.  I seem to recall using a can lid above the weight to help lift it on the retrieve.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I used to use1" of 1/4" pencil lead dropped from a 3-way swivel and 6' leader with Dick Nite spoons in various colors, but always had best luck with silver or 50/50

What are you wanting to fish for?
The Dick Nite rig Floyd is talking about works wonders for the pinks.

I should have clarified that's what I've used for pinks, but also caught trout & whitefish in both the upper Skagit and Sky.

I love using Panther Martin in the upper rivers, just make sure you are legal for the type of hooks. I have switched most of mine to single barbless hook  8)

One of the most simple and effective methods for pinks and silvers is  twitching jigs. Tie a 1/4 to 1/2oz maribou or rabbit jig on your line. Toss it into slack water, let it sink a couple seconds, then slowly retrieve it while lifting the rod tip every few cranks.

Didn't know there was much more than pinks up there, but would be happier with other than pinks....   ;)  Really just want my son to hopefully get more excited about fishing.

I would also look at slip bobbering- just figure out the depth and adjust. Great steelhead up that way

Floated it last weekend, pinks weren't biting anything.  50/50 and pink dick nites or the pink jigs.  It was insane how many pinks were schooling up and we never got a single bite.  Never seen anything like it.

Hooked five kings, landed three.

Bummer on not being able to keep Kings, got to catch something though.  I wonder why the pinks aren't biting.

The bite seems to come in waves. I've been out a couple times, and it was never consistent.

I was out last night on the skykomish and in 2.5 hours I hooked probably 25 and landed atleast 20 some were pretty bright and some looked like dinosaurs! I'm a drift fisher and I run a light pink corky with purple yarn with about a 18" leader . Get a distance from the launch or parking area away from the jiggers and you'll get them . I prefer faster water over the holes

Some of this. Faster water is where it's at. The corky and yarn, but so do the jigs. Small 1/8 oz shrimp pink, purple, or chartreuse jigs can work wonders. Work them over the top of a school like stripping a fly, the biters will engage.

You could always go way up river come towards the forks, and even above and fish small spinners and spoons for dollies. This time of year can be a good opportunity to catch some big dollies up river.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

Nice! Hooked one over 36" on the Tieton R. Many years ago. Broke it off trying to get it into shallow water for photos.  :(
