What water filter?
« on: September 13, 2017, 09:43:15 AM »
What water filters are you guys using in the back country? I am looking at the MSR miniworks ex but don't like that it doesn't have a discharge hose.

For shorter trips, I use the Katadyn Hiker Pro, and use the attachment to pump directly into my water reservoir in the backpack (where the quick disconnect for the drinking hose is).  For longer trips or group trips, I take the Katadyn Base camp gravity filter.

I've used the MSR Sweetwater Guardian in the past, but misplaced it in the many moves over the years.

And my wife bought me a steri-pen as a gift, but I've yet to actually use it.

I have the Katadyn Vario it works great for me. Light weight easy to use but most likely not sold anymore.

The only thing I don't like about the gravity feed is that if I puncture the bag then I would be screwed.

I'm a big fan of the Sawyer squeeze.  Cheap, easy, and light.

Any input on this one Katadyn Gravity Camp 6L? I will be on an 8 day back country hunt.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Katadyn brand.

the katadyn looks good, a bit expensive and not sure how easy to unclog in the backcountry. I have used Sawyer with a 5L bag for years and its worked great. On the high hunt i would bring two 5L bags so i was just making one trip to get enough water for several days. If it gets slow just plunge it.

The gravity camp is pretty much just the smaller version (6L) of the base camp (10L).  Uses same filter, same everything, just slightly smaller bag.  Katadyn did have a problem with those newer designs for the base camp and gravity camp where the filter would stop working well after the first 10-20L a few years back, but they have since fixed the design I believe.  I have the older base camp model (uses different filter, same as the one in the hiker pro) and that thing has been steady and sturdy over the years.

If concerned about holes, just make sure you have some duct tape or a tent repair kit patch in your backpack.  Should work fine.

Ive got the MSR Sweetwater and have been happy with it when I used it.

Honestly anymore I just go with the SteriPen and haven't had any issues. Use mu Buff over my Nalgene to eliminate large particulates then hit it with a steripen and drink.
