Calling Whitetails Early Season
« on: September 21, 2017, 11:32:22 AM »
Does anyone call whitetails during the early season before the rut? I had some success with this last year during muzzy but of course I can't know with certainty whether the bucks came to the area because of the calling or for other reasons. I watched some you tube stuff that said they will respond to calling and rattling early season but that seemed counter to my basic understanding about rattling etc... Any and all advice appreciated.

You can call them in during the early season, just not something I do often.   If you do try, tone down your sequences substantially.   "Tinkling" of antlers versus slamming them.    They can be quite curious

Thanks for the input. Would you couple some light rattling with a grunt call as well?

Very curious, watch them bump coyotes all the time.  Patience is a virtue

I have good luck just grunting this time of the year, not aggressive grunting like the pre rut and the actual rut.  Contact grunts and light ticking of the antlers is effective.
