Late Season (Nov22-Dec15th) Antlerless Help
« on: September 22, 2017, 10:12:02 AM »
This was my first year elk hunting as well as my first year with a bow. All of my previous experience has been Bear and Deer hunting with a rifle. I had three close calls with bulls this year. My unit was only open to three point or bigger.
So I was wondering during the late season should I expect to see the elk in similar areas I saw them in during September? I mostly only care about cows since my area is only open for antlerless in late season. I was in unit 506 during the early season.

Cows - maybe.  Mature bulls, definitely not.

In late season, find feed and sanctuary.

I think yes on cows although it will be cool and wet versus hot and dry so the animals will be less concentrated down low.

I don't want to eat tag soup this year, so I will be attempting a late season archery hunt as well.
I have a pretty good idea where they will be feeding this winter, a fresh clearcut with sign that they have already been there eating.

So, what is the best way to get in close to these herds in winter?
Find prints in the snow/ glass until you find them and then use the wind to get close enough for a shot?
Or is there cow calling involved?
Thanks

Have killed many cows late season, and usually hear cows and calves calling but I have not called back unless it was to stop one for a shot.  Had some chances for bulls late season  and they always start with seeing cows and sneaking in.
