Best trail cam for backcountry hunting?
« on: October 11, 2017, 11:47:14 AM »
Hey folks,

Any of you lugging trail cams into the back country?  I'm starting to look at / budget for a new trail camera and I'd like a smaller lighter option than my beloved Bushnell Essentials E3 camera.  I need to stay at or below that price point so somewhere south of $150 would be great.  I love the E3, but it's bulky, especially if I carry the steel case and cable to secure it.

And yes I realize the most obvious/efficient way of saving weight is by securing it another way besides using a bunch of steel.  I'm still curious though if you backcountry folks gravitate towards a particular camera or type.

Thanks!

Pretty hard to beat that. I use a different model of the Bushnell but if you want reliability you can't be them. :twocents:

I don't know if they meet your size/weight requirement but I have two moultries and two stealth cams. Both stealth cams were $80 and the moultries were around $100. I have used them in the backcountry for the past 5 years with good success in the summer months.  Moultrie M880 and stealth cam px-14s.

I started my first backcountry elk scouting trip mid August. I used these, and they seem to work great.

The closer I get to nature, the farther I am from idiots.

I use the bushnell HD’s. Also have a stealthcam. Also I use cable locks. Mainly for bears. All of them shoved into my pack on top of the trophy rocks. Weight of the rocks. I don’t bother worrying bout the camera weight.
