Bobcat around the house
« on: October 16, 2017, 11:46:13 AM »
This is one of several pics taken of a bobcat neat my folks place up at Lake Cavanaugh. Pic is taken with a phone at about 40-50 yards. How big do you think it Is? & which calling sequence do you think I should use?

Live chicken on a string staked out on the lawn, it’ll make its own calling sequence. ;)

Close to a 40 pounder from the looks of it, if I was using my ecaller, I would use a rabbit distress with blue jays in distress !! Or a distress bird that is common to that area!!
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

38.75#   :chuckle:

If legal, I'd catch a wild rabbit and tie that to a stake.   :bdid:   Might have some clipped training birds escape their cages  :dunno:
I have never used an ecaller, only a mouse squeaker

Looks like you just need to open the window and sip some coffee  :twocents:

I normally kept a 12 gauge leaned up against the door and would have made quick work of it. Been sighted a fair bit I've heard... starting to think a cat in distress may work better.

Great photo capture.  Hope you get him.  They have gorgeous, soft fur.  With so little for size reference, I don't think anyone could guess the weight very accurately.  I will guess 18-22 lbs. and fudge that to a possible 24 lbs. based on latitude and average bobcat sizes.  Pin me down and I'll guess 19 lbs. and worry that I should have guessed 16.    :P  Most bobcats aren't very heavy (if actually weighed and not guesstimated :) ) and anything over 25 lbs. is a big one, though a few will go to 40 lbs. and more.

I'd use a high pitched busy sound, one of the fast and frantic bird distress options if you are using an electronic.  Woodpecker distress is the classic for bobcats.  If using a hand call, produce a high pitched busy sound, which you can do with a closed reed cottontail call or an open reed call.  You can make a plenty good woodpecker distress with either of those type calls.

Looks like others have recommended similar sounds while I slowly typed.  :)

Added:  house cat distress is a very good call for bobcats.

Further addition:  if you shoot him, weigh him and let us know!

You obviously need people to give weight guesses and give a nice prize away, like a Cohiba or some bourbon, or both. 28 lbs, 4 oz. Elijah Craig is fine for me!

Nice pics! Healthy looking cat.

I'm in the Alger area and caught a bobcat on my trail cam last week. Looked like he was chasing rabbits. Haven't seen him in the daytime yet.

I've never really understood the thrill of shooting something in the back yard. if your losing live stock/pets or something I get it but the old lake house looks pretty peaceful with the cat walking by. enjoy having a unique animal around the house and head up to the hills calling for cats...
