Huckleberry Moose Late
« on: June 16, 2017, 10:32:53 AM »
I found out yesterday that an elderly friend, (over 70 years young), of mine drew this moose permit.
He lives in Yakima so his trips up for scouting may be limited.
I used to hunt deer in this unit but haven't been up in the area much in the last 20 years.

Any suggestions on where to start scouting for the late season moose permit?
Thanks
Scott

This pic was takin in huck unit ,could tell ya where it was ,but the chance that it's still there in fall is unlikely. Its a bull , but horns are just little now so hard to see. Also seen a cow the other day with a very small calf just born , so cute.

I always figured if I drew any of those moose tags I would get in touch with Dale the owner of this site at Bear Paw Outfitters. He is right there in the area, and could give you the best info.

That's sounds like a good option to me.

There is several guys here that would be willing to help point you in the right direction.  Search through the archives you'll learn a lot about the area also.  This is a bull from last year on the late Huckleberry.  Saw 28 different bulls in 4 days of the hunt.  Most of them young bulls, only saw two I would consider mature bulls.  He shouldn't have any problem filling his tag but might have to be a little selective if he wants a good one.  Good luck!

Update:

Bull Moose harvested!  :)

I was informed that the permit holder scored on his bull yesterday afternoon late in the day and that the last quarter was out at the truck around midnight.
I have not seen pictures but was informed that the bull had average size antlers and a very large body.
They only spent one day hunting.
Thanks for all of the suggestions on this hunt both posted and in private messages.

Congratulations to your friend, hopefully you can update with some pics. They're very big animals and the little I've been lucky enough to eat - very tasty.

Just had a moose roast from 2012 last week, still delicious!  We discovered several that migrated to the bottom of the freezer, darn....   :chuckle:

cool pics?
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter
