I carry a great GPS and carry a spot courtesy of my parents.  I still have newspaper articles and pictures of my grandfather being helicoptered into Vancouver from the Blues after being found 3 weeks after becoming lost during his last elk hunt in 1965.

One good thing about the spot over in-reach is the replaceable batteries.  I guess you can carry one of the power monkey's that will let you do it remotely for the in reach if needed.    Spot has been great for me.  I have carried it all over the world on various travels and take it with e in whatever vehicle I am in.  Better safe than sorry.  It has kept me out of the dog house several times when there was no cell service and I was able to let the boss know where I was.  As the technology gets better and cheaper, a two way messenger will replace the Spot.

Still holding out hope, or at least that he is located.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

I've been following the family on Facebook. They are still searching for him. They're actively looking for volunteers, and anyone with some type of snow machine.
I still have hope they find him alive, but there's over five feet of snow now and thirty more inches coming by the weekend.

The agony of that family must be horrible.

Can't shake it. As elk hunters we all can relate. This is too sad.
Can't we all just get along?

Garmin inreach. Worth every penny. Yea it’s $500 out the door with a monthly payment plan or just pay as you use it. Has a S.O.S button. Gives updated tracks to whoever you send the “my map” link to. Battery life is unbelievable. Backcountry with a 30 min location update setting. Lasted 5 days. Works in heavy cover areas. Can send and receive texts. The spot is decent. Way to cliche for me. I want something I can depend on. Garmin never let me down. Like I said $500 is pennies when you really need it.

John, I agree.  Maybe the other spurious traffic could be separated into another thread.  It’s great info, but there is a fellow hunter missing.

Real easy to get turned around in Indian Heaven especially with fog and snow.  All the meadows look the same - have gone in a circle more than once up there.  This would be a great day for prayers to be answered.

My son was reading about this on Facebook. He looked at me and said "we seen cat tracks all over the 574, and every year there seems to be that much more". We hunt just south of the Forlorn Lake's. I told my son that anything is possible.

I hunt near the Indian race track area and with those lava fields sometimes the compass is all over the place. Definitely could be a part of the problem. Hope he turns up.

Wonder if SAR has an overlay map of the grid search...I look at that map and make a guess where I would hunt at...but now with this much snow you could walk right by him...still holding out hope.
