Dang Squirrels
« on: November 20, 2017, 09:48:09 AM »
They've been eating our apples but I'm never around when they are.  I knocked one off this summer and thought there was only one other around.  This morning, there were three in my yard, had to wait for shots where I would not put a pellet through a window of the garage or somewhere else I didn't want it.  I managed to get two of them and caused the third to jump as I shot under him on his way out of the yard.

Now we have enough for a good crockpot full of squirrel.

Any idea what they score? I hear those island squirrels are small, but they're all trophies in my eyes.

Chicken of the trees. Are you and the Mrs going to eat them? They're pretty tasty deep fried.

Yep, got one last summer that has been waiting for some company in the slow cooker.

The third one was back about an hour later when I came home to grab something I forgot, but no shots on it.

Try not to shoot them in the head, that's the best part!

You put the heads in the crock pot then when you eat them you simply grab the head, pop the top with the back of a spoon and suck out the tasty goo.

I have always been under the impression squirrels are protected here in WA and you can't shoot them. Have I been missing out on some target practice and meat for the crock pot when I'm in the woods?
God Bless,
Scott

Some of them can be hunted, mainly the non-native eastern squirrels

all I have is the reds, wouldn't eat them if I could, heard they taste like a pine tree  :dunno:

The "reds" Tamiasciurus douglasii are protected, eastern Fox Squirrels are fair game just as are the Eastern Grays that we have here on Decatur Island.  There are no native squirrels or even chipmunks here.
