West side archers any luck?
« on: November 30, 2017, 02:39:00 PM »
Any west side late season archers having any luck?

Tough go at it so far this way. Hope others are doing well.
Some animals WERE harmed in the making of this Hunter. They were also dragged through the dirt, butchered and tasted delicious fried with butter and bacon.

Well, I actually saw several live elk yesterday.  At this point, I'm considering that "having luck".

I tagged out on a big cow on Sunday (11/26)  Double lunged her at 40 yards and she went down quick! There was still a legal bull in the group but she gave me the best shot and I wasn't going to pass it up.  Good luck

No sir. Seen some decent sign but just can't seem to pattern any movements yet. Made the mistake of basically scouting one area for my early season which isn't open for late season. That being said I've been having to find new areas in units I've never been to. Hoping to at least get on something this weekend. Good luck everyone.

Had 2 encounters with bulls last weekend, but we were busted both times and couldn't get a shot off.

Was out last weekend hunting for deer, ended up bumping 10 cows held up at about 80yd broadside out in Winston. Don't underestimate the small plots of land. You never know.

Been going out just about every day. Seems like I'm a day or 2 behind them. Scouted, hiked countless miles,  'think' in doing it all the right way lol.  I've only seen 1 cow and it was after legal light.
Anyone that's filled there tag, feel free to drop me a pm with info.   :hello: I'm hunting to feed the fam.

Slow, slow, slow.  Got after it for several days.  Man those elk were on edge.  Have had a few sightings, but they don't wait around very long.  Started to see some fresh sign up on the roads, thinking maybe they're using the roads after dark and before light.  Otherwise its been real tough.  The weather sucks too, I havn't seen, bumped or jumped anything when its nasty out there.  We'll see, another 12 days at this point, maybe things will calm down and they will stick their noses out.

Finally got onto a small herd right before last light on Friday. Had 5 cows at 64 yrds but the lead cow had me pinned. The rest of the herd busted and she followed. I've been on fresh sign and beds consistently but can't seem to be able to come home with anything besides frustration. Hiked over 20 miles this weekend, dealt with the fantastic rain, wind and fog. Deer seem to be ghosted out as well. I've bumped about 7 does during legal hrs, been on fresh scrapes and scat but can't seem to catch a break. Even found what I figured would be an oasis covered in fresh sign both elk and deer today but turned up nothing. I've still hunted, attempted spot and stalk (can't stalk what you can't spot), sat on heavy trails at first light and last. Maybe I'm over analyzing everything but I seem to be doing something wrong.

IDK about elk.. I hunt them and have yet to succeed.. but this year after being frustrated with deer I finally got one. What I did was I told myself I was just going into the woods for fun. If I saw a deer then cool if not then ohh well. Instead of being frustrated all morning from not seeing anything I just kept going with a grin on my face because I was outdoors and enjoying the mountains. Then around 2:30 pm I found a deer and got my shot. Thinking this approach next year will work out for me with elk hopefully. Just go into the woods with 0 expectations other than having a good day outside with clean air in my lungs. I think that we get sooo wrapped up in finding trails then tracking them and pushing ourselves super hard to get these animals that we go too far overboard and need to just step back to the simpler mindset. If its meant to be it will happen, if not.. you enjoyed a day in the woods! Go get em guys! Good luck!

Elk were in yard last nite. Wife called when I was on my way home and said they were getting ready to cross the road to our side. Then the youngest tried to bugle them over. They ran behind the neighbors shop. Our side of the road is legal to hunt, the neighbors is closed to archery. Maybe they will come over before dark.
