Have GMUs changed over the years
« on: December 10, 2017, 03:49:13 AM »
I was looking over the 1997 harvest reports http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/1997/97harvst.pdf and couldn't find any information for GMU 247/Entiat. So have the GMUs changed over the years and if so, which GMU did Entiat GMU reside in back then?

There have been some changes over the years but all that changed with the Entiat was the number. You see it listed in the report you linked as GMU number 308.

Crazy to see that 1997 deer harvest/hunters totals are nearly the same as 2016.

A lot!
484 used to be the Puyallup unit in the 60's and into the 70's which had a southern border of the Nisqually River. They sold a bunch of elk tags for that unit all either sex because as the locals all knew, there's no elk there.  When the Bald Hill heard got split up and crossed over the river, the border line got moved north to the McKenna Tanawax Highway. Some folks got ticketed for elk hunting in what was the old Puyallup unit because they diden't realize the unit had changed.  When the elk crossed over the highway, then the regulations changed back to the Nisqually river with an elk draw tag only.
Musical boarders back then!

This makes some sense because if I recall correctly we had a pretty bad winter kill in '96.

I assumed they did.  The GMU numbering makes zero sense in district 10.  The numbers are all over the place - it's like they used a dart board to pick a number for each unit.
