Which non-.223 AR - convince me
« on: December 29, 2017, 12:42:33 PM »
I've got a lower receiver and want to order the rest of the parts before it's illegal.  I have a .556 and don't want another one.  What other caliber and why?  I've thought about 300 BK or one of the big 45 cals.  Not sure what to do.

Other factors:

1) I don't currently reload but may start.
2) I'm not concerned with it being a long range gun.  If I want a long range gun, I'll buy a bolt gun.
3) I like the idea of buying a silencer but am not sure I will.

What would you all get?

I love shooting my bland boring 308. Easy to load,  plenty of downrange power, easy enough to find components.

.300 BLK

It's not a long range gun but works well out to 200+ yards
All you need is the upper, you can use your 556 lower, BCG, and mags
Works very well with a suppressor
reload or not, there is lots of ammo choices

Sounds like he has another 15 sized receiver, not a 10 which the .308 would require.

A 6.5 Grendel might be fun, if reloading is a serious future consideration.

If just wanting OTC, maybe the .300 Blackout then...

While having something built is always fun, during the Clinton era ban you could still purchase uppers and replacement parts.

That was then.  Pretty sure they will have "learned from their mistakes" and the next go around will likely be all inclusive, no parts or pieces included in the ban.  Oh, and don't forget the 80% "Ghost gun" receivers and 30 round mag clips...

We all know how they like to "close loopholes" afterall.

Sadly, I believe it is coming, and when it hits the voter pamplet, it will be gone as sure as hound, baiting and leg hold traps.

6.5 Grendel is my all time favorite non 223/556.
I also love my 6x45 but really got to load those.
25x45 isn’t to bad of round either.

I would get a side charging 6.5 grendel.

Side chargers don't blow crap back in your face with a can on. The traditional charging handle and forward assist seem to make this more common. Additionally mounting a scope may be easier because you don't have to worry about the charging handle being in the way.

6.5 grendel
Good for everything from rockchucks coyotes deer antelope, or possibly bigger at close ranges.
Seems to be the accepted cool caliber for the platform so finding the kind of upper you want shouldn't kill the bank.
Ammo availability is important to me. I can appreciate reloading and you could argue that by playing with loads this may be a do it all caliber for this state. The fact that Hornady makes quality shooting ammo off the shelf for reasonable, combined with the fact you can purchase zinc coated steel cased ammo in bulk for cheap make it a winner.

If the military didn't have such huge stockpiles of 556 I bet they would transition to this caliber. I also think this is why many civilians like the caliber because  they can benifit from the improvements in the AR 15 platform but are not weighed down by a huge supply cache.

Nobody is a fan of the 45 or 50 cal options?  Seems like those would work well as a close range deer gun.

458 SOCOM.

Basically a 45/70 in an AR platform.

Could be fun. Or a great west side deer/elk/bear gun.

I went with the 300 Blackout. Ammo is easy to get. Subsonic ammo is readily available too, for when you get your suppressor. It took about a year to get government permission for the suppressor so don’t wait.

I've got a Rock River Armory complete 458 SOCOM upper, never shot, with some virgin brass and maybe 60 rounds of live ammo. $900 TYD.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............
